Product Description

Description

Cloning, bioterrorism, genetic engineering, not since the atom bomb has science had such potential to change the world. Canada, Mexico and the United States have created a trilateral task force, The North American Biotechnology Advisory Commission, or NorBAC, to investigate questionable advances in the fields of biotechnology, bio-weaponry and nanotechnology. Under the charismatic leadership of Chief Scientist David Sandström (Peter Outerbridge) and Executive Director Caroline Morrison (Maxim Roy), the Toronto based organization struggles to understand the political, legal and personal underbrush in which new science has become entangled.

From the Director

Baby Bomb – Episode 1 It’s a race against time to identify the cause of a deadly virus, spreading rapidly and headed straight for the city. It’s up to NorBAC to identify patient zero and contain the outbreak. David must also deal with the unexpected arrival of his teenage daughter Lilith (Ellen Page). Spare Parts – Episode 2 Lilith befriends Mick, who is dying and desperate for David to help him discover if he really is a clone and possibly save his life. Meanwhile, NorBAC has managed to locate patient zero and must proceed with the interrogations at “Hazmat City”. Was this an act of Bioterrorism? The Face of God – Episode 3 Mick turns to Lilith, who helps him steal evidence from the scientist who apparently cloned him, his own father. Meanwhile, Caroline suggests that Hira has possible terrorist links and shuts her out of NorBAC. Prions – Episode 4 NorBAC investigates an outbreak of brain wasting prion disease (mad cow) in humans. The victims are spread out across North America. The most surprising is a 5 year old girl, since the disease normally takes 7 years to show. David suspects his old friend Danny, a major league hockey player, has undergone a process to have himself genetically modified. The Oldest Virus – Episode 5 As the search continues for the source of the deadly prions, NorBAC zeros in on a large agribusiness they suspect of selling infected chickens. David tries to convince Danny to stop gene therapy. Caroline insists that David interview Jill Langston for the vacated virologist position at NorBAC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Need more seasons!, May 29 2009

This review is from: ReGenesis: Season One (DVD)
ReGenesis is an absolutely fantastic television series, and I was so pleased to see that it was released on Hulu in the US as a content partnership. I pretty much instantly decided that I needed to own it so that I could watch it over and over at leisure, and was dismayed to find that I couldn't pick it up here in the States; fortunately, Amazon.ca was perfectly happy to send a copy.

My major complaint is that seasons 2, 3, and 4 are not out on DVD yet!

ReGenesis raises a number of fascinating legal, ethical, and moral issues. I love seeing the series explore controversial topics, and I think that all of the cast are absolutely brilliant. In an era when epidemic disease is raising its ugly head again, ReGenesis seems more relevant than ever.

An excellent, intelligent biotech SF series. Can't wait until more seasons are released. I have lent my copy to a lot of friends, and they all asked 'when is next season coming out on dvd'?

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting & realistic series on bio-terrorism, Aug 15 2009

Since I live in the U.S. I wasn't able to see this series on regular TV (it wasn't aired here) but was very happy to be able to purchase it on DVD Region 1. Like Da Vinci's Inquest, another Canadian TV series and the U.S. series Veronica Mars, it has multiple episode storyline arcs with the last episode of the first season resolving the bio-terroism plot that was first seen in the first episode.

It has a good mix of different character nationalities represented on the show. And while it does have tech talk, it isn't hard for the novice for follow along. Most of the themes on it were believable such as the recurrance of the Spanish Flu, new treatments for AIDs, and biological warfare. I liked that they also dealt with the dangers of bio-engineering as well as ethical issues with the storyline about Mick Sloan, who was born for the purpose of providing bone marrow for his identical twin brother.

I liked most of the characters, but I feel that the main character David Sandstrom is not very likable as a person or a scientist. A constant womanizer, who seems to have sex with almost every female character on the show, he's also not much of a parent and provides no support to his colleagues. I don't know why he's written that way. In contrast, the other characters seem to have depth, such as Bob, a genius who has Asberger's Syndrome and Jill Langston, who suffers from panick attacks and made a serious mistake in her published research.

Besides the scientists, it also has characters such as Caroline Morrison and others who interface with the CIA, police, and government in official capacities.

I hope that seasons 2-4 come out on DVD also so that I can see them. I would definitely recommend this series.
