5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Gardener's Resource!, Dec 17 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This is a book that you might use intensively when first learning about gardening and plants but will come back to over and over when you come across a problem, disease, question or an unusual plant and you need information about it.

This 640 page book is jam packed with drawings, and information about growing and sustaining plants in Canada. The book is laid out in sections such as Trees, Shrubs & Vines, Roses (they have their own section!), Perennials, Annuals and Biennials, Tubers, Irises, Rock Plants, lilies, Water Plants, Herbs, Soil, House Plants, Green House Gardening, etc. The book is not packed with colour photos but every tree, shrub or plant is detailed meticulously with black and white drawings. I've found the drawings sufficient to identify plants using the book.

Each plant has information about its foilage, care, height and spread, species and variety. I really find the section on special requirements and remarks to be the most useful - with recommendations on when to sow seed, what kind of soil or light it tolerates and other really useful tidbits of information.

The section on pests, diseases and weeds if very useful with full colour examples. I found the sections on the various ways to propagate, divide, prune and train plants (espilar) to be the most useful.

There are huge sections on fruits and vegetables covering everything from What can go wrong, varieties, how to grow, etc.

I would rate this book without hesitation as a 5 star, can't be without reference tool for either the beginner or advanced gardener.
