About the Author
ERNEST CLINE has worked as a short-order cook, fish gutter, plasma donor, elitist video store clerk, and tech support drone. His primary occupation, however, has always been geeking out, and he eventually threw aside those other promising career paths to express his love of pop culture fulltime as a spoken word artist and screenwriter. His 2009 film Fanboys, much to his surprise, became a cult phenomenon. These days Ernie lives in Austin, Texas with his wife, their daughter, and a large collection of classic video games. READY PLAYER ONE is his first novel.See all Product Description

As soon as I opened it up and started reading about Wade and his quest for Halliday's egg I couldn't stop. Every page led me to another memory from my childhood and every hint kept me guessing where it was going to lead. Honestly, the dept of knowledge that Cline has on 80's pop culture is phenomenal! Of course there are going to be those that say, "Yeah, but that information is readily available online!" Yeah, I'm sure that it is, but simply being able to compile such a vast amount of information to even BEGIN with before even thinking about looking up the facts is amazing! He spouts off games and information that (I'd imagine) only a handful of people alive know exists.
I've read critics says that it's simply the "nostalgic" factor that makes this book sell. I found the book to be a really fun ride from the very first page to the very last. I couldn't wait to finish and see how it ended and now I can't wait to start it all over!
Final Verdict: Read it, read it, READ IT!!!!!
Ready Player One is completely original and unique. I haven't read anything like this and I think it was the perfect story to introduce me to the science fiction genre. I have always wanted to get into science fiction and fantasy and I was never really sure where to start. I've read other stories within this genre and none have ever really grabbed me. Ready Player One has definitely changed that.
I think that the blurb on the front cover of this book describes it perfectly. "Willy Wonka meets The Matrix." The idea of a worldwide hunt for the billions of dollars inside a simulated world called OASIS, left behind by the man who created it, is just such a unique and interesting concept. The thought that went into this novel is unreal. Everything was thoroughly crafted and detailed. There were no holes left in the story and I didn't question a single moment. This was an insanely fast paced read and absolutely nothing dragged on.
The references within this book are fantastic. Although I wasn't alive during the 80's, I grew up with parents who experienced the amazing decade while they were in their 20s. I grew up listening to the music and watching the movies that were popular during that decade. I feel very proud to say that I understood quite a lot of the movie and music references.Read more ›
Now, granted, this is no ordinary video game. In the 2020's, immersive virtual reality finally takes off in the form of the OASIS. The OASIS is like a usual RPG, with avatars, quests, magic, monsters, and all that, but is also so much more—it has quickly become the world's dominant platform for economics, education, and leisure time. So many users spend so much time logged into the OASIS, for such a wide variety of reasons, that "real-world" economics, education, and leisure have nearly disappeared.
Before the eccentric creator of the OASIS died, he coded into the OASIS an elaborate and fiendishly difficult Easter egg hunt, with the top prize being full control of his multi-billion dollar company. For years, the leaderboards sat empty, until a high-school kid and egg hunter (or "gunter" for short) named Wade (avatar Parzival) finally cracks the first clue. Overnight, Parzival is an OASIS-wide celebrity, attracting interest from fellow gunters as well as the IOI, a multinational corporation dead-set on winning control of and exploiting the OASIS, even if it means murder.
Ready Player One has a unique style—following the theme of video game Easter eggs, the novel is packed with references to nerd culture of the 80's (which is itself the theme of the hunt). Maybe I'm just 20 years too young, but the rapidity with which Cline fires off these references grows quite tiresome. I understand most of the references, but I just can't appreciate them with any sense of nostalgia.Read more ›
