Book Description

Jan. 3 2012

You planned for the first day of your marriage… Are you planning for the last?

While a wonderful wedding day is important, it’s the last day of marriage that really counts. Will the last day of your marriage come prematurely through divorce? Will it be filled with regrets as you sit at the funeral of your spouse? Or, by God’s grace, will the last day be a day to rejoice in the life you lived together?

Pastor Mark Driscoll and his wife, Grace, want you to finish well on the last day. Through their book Real Marriage and this eleven-week, DVD-based study, they share practical help and hope with people just like them—who entered marriage a complete mess—or who are planning to be married someday and want to avoid some sticky pitfalls in the future.

The Real Marriage DVD-Based Study Kit is uniquely designed for groups of all sizes, and for those married or considering marriage. Each DVD session features Mark and Grace sharing not only the struggles and successes in their own marriage, but also important lessons they have taken from their experience counseling countless couples. Together they tackle the tough issues such as friendship with your spouse, pornography and sexual assault, submission and respect, and sexual intimacy in marriage. Each session in the Participant’s Guide provides engaging group study questions and essential homework for husbands, wives, and singles alike, with the goal of experiencing the grace of Christ.

God desires for your marriage to be full of joy and happiness as it glorifies His Son. Jesus makes such marriage possible through His death and resurrection.

The Real Marriage DVD-Based Study Kit includes:

  • Eleven 10- to 15-minute video sessions featuring Pastor Mark and Grace Driscoll

3.0 out of 5 stars Real marriage... Jan. 31 2012
By vjshimko - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD-ROM
When I first requested Real Marriage, I really had no idea that it had stirred up so much controversy among Christian circles and beyond, I just thought it might be something good to consider for marriage enrichment with couples in our church. While this review is primarily for the DVD-based study, I also read the book to help me get a better grasp of all of the material there. So first, the content...the first "big idea" in the book is, in my opinion, the best one: Marriage as Friendship. This section includes five chapters, with one chapter addressed specifically to the men and one for the women readers. There are many who will take issue with the complementarian views for which Driscoll is well-known. While I don't agree entirely with every opinion or emphasis that is presented, there is still much that can be learned from each of these chapters in loving and respecting one another. The second part of the book moves to more a more provocative topic: Sex. There five chapters here as well, including one where the Song of Solomon is used as a reference for determining what activities are "allowed" or "beneficial". If you are having questions in your marriage of how to set healthy boundaries in this area, they you would probably benefit from the material here. However, if you tend to be uncomfortable with frank discussion of ALL types of sexual expression, you may want to skip it. The part of the book that rocked my world the most, was a short little section tucked in chapter 10, addressing birth control. While I won't unpack it here, it challenged me to really apply some convictions on the value of human life in ways that I had never considered. Finally, the last part of the book gets very practical in helping couples to "reverse engineer" their marriage so that the focus is on how you want your marriage to end...setting goals and formulating a plan together. This was only one chapter of the book, and I think the DVD study would be a good tool to expand on the material in the book. The study includes a 143-page participant's guide, which has lots of material for couples to invest in their relationship, through questions and activity suggestions. The videos are okay... Mark and Grace sitting in the church where they were married and discussing (mostly to one another) the material in the book. Each session covers a chapter, with eleven 10- to 15-minute sessions. If you are a fan of Mark Driscoll's, you will love it. If you are a hater, you will hate it. For those of us in between, just looking for a good tool to enrich our marriage...there's a lot of good material here. It is not the best book on marriage that is out there, but there is much in the book and DVD study that is unique and useful to improve marriages.
I received this DVD study free from Booksneeze, a blogger review program.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Group Study April 20 2012
By Tory - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD-ROM
There's been so much controversy about Mark Driscoll and his book and book tour of "Real Marriage." I will admit, I wasn't looking forward to this DVD series and so I gave it to a friend who is doing the group study in her small young marrieds community group. She's actually going to give me a better, more in depth write up of the study. From what I looked it, (without doing it in a group) is a DVD kit that looks like it would be excellent for use in a small group. There's an openness in the DVD that promotes people to be open about their own struggles; there are topics addressed that would be difficult to approach had it not been brought up in the DVD. The questions are probing but constructive. I am looking forward to hearing what my friend thought of it in a group couples setting. Mark Driscoll often gets in trouble for the brash way he can come across but many really need to hear the straightforwardness of his words and, though I might not always like or agree, I am thankful for him and his ministry.

I received a copy of the DVD by booksneeze. The views I hold are my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read Feb. 3 2013
By JB9892 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD-ROM|Verified Purchase
My hubby and I purchased this to do a study with a group of our friends. We really enjoyed the candid conversations in the book and gave us a lot to discuss and talk about. The DVDS were not our favorite; we stopped watching after the first couple because we wanted more time with our group to discuss the chapter. We have really enjoyed the reverse-engineering aspect at the end where we plan what the next 2, 5, 10 years look like for us. Magnificent marriages don't just happen; they take work!

4.0 out of 5 stars Our small group used this and it was helpful March 27 2012
By Aaron M. Marcelli - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD-ROM
Several months ago I received the Real Marriage DVD and group discussion guide that accompanies the book by the same name written by Mark and Grace Driscoll. The video curriculum has eleven discussions, one that compliments each chapter of the book.

My wife and I used the DVD and guide to lead a two month marriage series with our young couples's small group. I was the only one in the group who read the book during the period of our discussions but that did not seem to hinder the discussion. There was enough content in the 15 minute video clips and discussion guides for the twelve of us to have productive conversations about various aspects of our marriages.

In four sessions we chose to cover the chapters on friendship, commitment, repentance, and a guys and girls separated session on our distinct challenges and responsibilities in the relationship. Most of the stories told by the Driscolls were difficult to relate to young couples without kids. Some of the discussion questions were simplistic and did not generate complex discussion. Also, some of the chapters we chose not to discuss were repetitive and discussed sex in such depth that not everyone may have felt comfortable sharing in a group setting.

Overall, I think this material was beneficial for our group. There was certainly some good discussion and things learned by our group. I think discussing our marriages in detailed and personal ways also brought our group closer together. I would recommend this content for almost any married group that would like to discuss their marriages in the company of other couples who could hold them accountable for healthy relationships. There is also some content included for singles so they would not feel excluded from the discussions. However, the group leader(s) may want to sift through the material as we did and select the most applicable topics as eleven sessions could cause people to loose interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good kit which deals with some typically taboo subjects Jan. 2 2012
By fizzle7033 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD-ROM
I was excited to receive this kit, and anxiously awaited the arrival of the package. Upon opening I quickly found that the book on which this study is based is not included, so please be aware of this when purchasing as it will be very helpful to read the book "Real Marriage" as well. This study seeks to create a sense of friendship and oneness within a couple. It is recommended for those which are engaged, newlyweds or long time married couples. I believe it would be most useful for those who have been married a while and at that point where each starts to take the other for granted.
The study covers such topics as porn and various sexual acts and the Biblical teachings behind what is and is not acceptable. I found this very interesting since this is an area which is often not discussed in Church, but is material which many may question! I found this kit very useful, but the Taboo subject matter in some sections may make it very difficult for smaller Churches or those with an older congregation.
