The Realm of Kings hardcover picks up where War of Kings left us and continues with a one shot that splinters into two miniseries: Realm of Kings Inhumans and Imperial Guard. On a negative tangent, this book includes a third miniseries: Realm of Kings Son of Hulk. Unfortunately, this third of the book is absolutely awful and does not tie in with Realm of Kings at all. I entered the miniseries with a hopeful eye as all the new characters introduced in the cosmic events have been interesting. This is not the case here and reader be warned, Hiro-Kala has no redeeming qualities and is a bore to read. Also, the setting is the microverse (alternate universe) and as such has not even the possibility of tying into the event since the event is occupying our universe. This makes it all the more ridiculous that it is included in this book.On the positive side, the two series that are actually relevant and written by DnA are wonderful. If you loved War of Kings you need to read these two series to see where the two factions end up, and the ending of the book leaves things in a good place to prepare you for the Thanos Imperative. It's unfortunate that Marvel packaged this book in the way they did, if they removed the Son of Hulk and gave us the related issues of Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy that they solicit at the end this book would more resemble the War of Kings collection which encased the relevant plot lines. Regardless, this hardcover is thoroughly enjoyable and strongly recommended for cosmic lovers. Four stars only because the guy writing Son of Hulk is getting a cut of the profits.

Realm of Kings Hardcover collection is a great read if you are into the cosmic aspects of the Marvel Universe. Its not that great though if you aren't familiar with the previous cosmic storylines especially War of Kings (which is highly recommended and worth every penny). The HC collection has a lot of story. 2 mini series and one shot. The one shot that starts it off is really quite good and Abnett & Lanning do a great job setting up the new status of the marvel cosmic universe. The next 2 mini written by Abnett & Lanning are great pieces on the inhumans and the Imperial guard. The art was great and the story telling hooked me but left me longing for more.My biggest issue was the final story. Son of Hulk. I found extremely hard to understand what was going on and i very familiar with the marvel universe. The story was not that engaging and the art really didn't have great layouts. It was bummer to end this great collection on a down note. the other problem is that the story is not resolved and you are left with a lot of questions when it ends. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful

I waited a long time for this to be released after the War of Kings book. I was disappointed. The War of Kings book was one of my favorites but Realm of Kings was a missed opportunity. The X-Men that were present throughout the Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire, Emperor Vulcan and War of Kings just get dumped in one line of dialogue saying that they are back on earth. They aren't in any current books so kind of a big what the? moment. Overall this book is three mini series collected in one hardcover. The Inhumans series is the best and a good read. Imperial Guard is okay but has terrible artwork. I hope Kevin Walker doesn't do another book I'm interested in. The Son of Hulk doesn't even belong here. Scott Reed is out of his league here when compared to Abnett and Lanning. If you have War of Kings, you will buy this because you want to know what happens. Nothing really happens though, it is just a set up for the Fault as a way to use any dimension or alternate universe Marvel wants to use. I hope the next book lives up to the previous books in the cosmic line. I highly recommend Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire (Brubaker was underrated on Uncanny X-Men) and War of Kings (what a finish!).

This volume sets up the cosmic scene for the next major installment. It shows where the Inhumans, Kree & Sh'iar are and what is on the other side of The Vault. It's a really interesting plot device.The first chapter sets up the scene for the next epic and then it's into the royal intrigue of the Inhuman court. This is the strongest of the different parts of this book. The Imperial Guard come across well and are given good depth in their story The Son of Hulk storyline had very little impact and I wasn't too impressed by the character. Overall, this cosmic storyline keeps getting better & better. |
