This two-disc retrospective -- which includes favorites like "Constant Craving" and "Smoke Rings," as well as ten tracks that never appeared on k.d. lang albums; and interpretations of classic songs like Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and The Hollies "The Air That I Breathe" -- illustrates how lang got to this significant point in her career, 25 years after the independent release of her debut, A Truly Western Experience. As lang moved from the subversively whimsical cow-punk sound of her early career in Western Canada to a broader pop palette, she has shown an ever-increasing sophistication, both as songwriter and interpreter. Dramatic, country-meets-lounge opener "Trail of Broken Hearts," from her 1989 Grammy Award-winning Absolute Torch and Twang album, encapsulates where she came from and where she was heading. The luxurious adult pop of "Constant Craving," from the platinum-selling 1992 Ingenue, garnered her a Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female Grammy and remains her best known and most successful single. The effervescent "Miss Chatelaine," also from Ingenue, remains a concert favorite and "I Dream of Spring," is a particularly lush example of what she so artfully created for the acclaimed Watershed.
Her bravura rendition of "Crying," originally cut with Orbison for the soundtrack to the movie Hiding Out, has become a showstopper in her live performances, perhaps rivaled only be her beautifully restrained version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." This soaring signature tune appears here as both a new recording, and in its original studio version. On her 2004 Nonesuch debut, Hymns of the 49th Parallel, she explored the work of her fellow Canadian songwriters, including Neil Young ("Helpless") and the woefully underrated Jane Siberry (the sublime "The Valley"). Regardless of its source, her choice of cover material has always been inspired, as evidenced by her take on the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe," Joni Mitchell's "Help Me," the Beatles' Golden Slumbers," and Chris Isaak's "Western Stars," produced by Nashville legend Owen Bradley, Patsy Cline's mentor, for Shadowlands. lang is equally adept with such standards as Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" and "So In Love," and the jazz classic Moonglow" (performed here with Tony Bennett), and that has endeared her to a multi-generational audience.

A "MUST HAVE" Collection of songs for any fan adoring "TRUE VOCALISTS",
By
This review is from: Recollection (Audio CD)
This double CD is a marvellous retrospective that accurately showcases k.d.'s natural vocal artistry.During her 25 years in the industry she slowly became regarded as one of the most highly praised female vocalists on the planet. This Canadian vocalist gradually achieved unanimous praise and recognition from a cynical music industry without having to revert to questionable vocal acrobatics often associated with other current female vocalists. k.d. does not aspire to grab her audience's attention by performing insincere vocal acrobatics. Although she is known to emotionally wrench out the lyrical content within a song with a subtle vocal nuance, she excell as a vocalist when softly conquering any musical style with an impressive yet restrained vocal range. The bulk of the material contained on this collection is ballad inspired. KD's soothing vocal delivery is pure and in the same vein as other timeless female musical vocalists such as; Ella, Rosemary and Karen Carpenter. K.D's label originally introduced her to the public at large with releases such as SHADOWLANDS. At first, the label promoted her as being a new alternative country vocalist - the first track upon CD 1 does allow you to hear the single TRAIL OF BROKEN HEARTS as well as the 6th track WESTERN STARS. These tracks immediately supplied her with instant adulation from adoring country fans claiming her to be the next Patsy Cline. Whether performing from a country, standards or pop repertoire - kd's vocal delivery remains impressively pure and comforting. Through the years her image as a singer progressively evolved into being regarded as an awe-inspiring vocalist who successfully interprets melody line and lyrical content. One has to only listen once to her passionate and polished vocal delivery of Leonard Cohen's HALLELUJAH to confirm this statement. The touching remake of HALLELUJAH, as sung by KD at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics, is worth the entire price of this collection. One should note; there are two versions of this song available upon this double CD. The track heard on CD2 is not the identical version available upon her previous 2004 release "Hymns of the 49th Parallel" which can also be found on CD1. The tasteful yet simple packaging of this product remains within the true essence of this Artist - its unpretentious and environmentaly friendly. The generous content available on this double CD will only develop within you a thirst to hear and acquire more from her complete catalogue. Musically this product is very much worth its price in Gold!

KD is still wonderful,

KD Lang has came in and out of my listening habits over the years, but her performance at the Winter Olympics brought me back to her and her magical voice and phrasings. Recollections is why you buy cds and full albums rather than just downloading individual songs; the best treasure discovered for me (of many) was her Golden Slumbers/ The End. The love you get is equal to the love you give

We would recommend "Recollections" to everyone without the slightest hesitation.K.D.Lang's most beautiful style and the clearest voice....every word can be understood in all these heartfelt songs. We heard her sing "Hallelujah" at the Winter Olympic ceremonies and it left a lasting impression on us and that's why we bought this CD. We were certainly not disappointed....every song on the two Cd's is absolutely beautiful!
