Product Description

From Amazon.com

John Sampson continues to sharpen the contrast between the noisy agitprop of his former band Propagandhi and the low-key melodicism of his current one on this, the Winnipeg-based Weakerthans third full album. Forcefully literate (Sampson spent time between his two musical projects writing and launching a small publishing business) yet wed to a coolly urgent alt-pop musical sense that nicely underplays his self-conscious musings on personal obsessions that variously take in the title track's introspective impressionism, the poisonous nature of nostalgic, ritual cronyism on "Psalm For the Elks Lodge Last Call," and the acoustic poison-pen letter to his native Winnipeg, "One Great City." Propelled by a straightforward, occasionally jangly electric guitar assault, yet lightly seasoned with deft horn touches, pedal steel and simple harmonies, it's an album that's smart at every level. --Jerry McCulley

4.0 out of 5 stars So much good music, Jun 16 2004

Just a quick note as a survivor of the new wave 80's and then the grunge 90's it is so rewarding to hear so many good bands out there, this is a great time to be a listener of music. OK, on to this partcular achievement. This is my first Weakerthans purchase. I really like this CD. I cannot classify it in the sub-genre's you young un's use (lo-fi, Alt-coutnry, Etc...). I just know it is good. I hope it is OK to say what it REMINDS me of without out other reviewers coming down on me. Mind you I am not comparing it to any other artists, but like the Decemberists and Neutral Milk this guy writes great lyrics. I also am reminded of Neil Young, Super XX man and Silver Scooter.

The music is honest and mature, with a sense of humor. I love the idea of having his cat write him a song! All the tracks are excellent and set a mood of the vast Canadian landscape where this groups hails form. Echoing, stark and sometimes depressing, (but always with a hopeful note).

These songs are short stories set to a folky beat and they work very, very well!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must have cd., Jun 7 2004

I wrote this review for an independent magazine my friends and I were making. I just thought I'd post it on here.

Although recently signed to Epitaph, The Weakerthans aren't what you'd expect from the former lead singer of Propagandhi. They mix emo, punk, folk, and a touch of alt. country to create an original sound all their own. In their third release, Reconstruction Site, they branched out with a few new instruments, including glockenspiel, vibes, lap steel, and even a trumpet on the album's opening track. John K.'s lyrics are genius, thought-provoking, and at times, quirky. Standout tracks include "Manifest", "Reconstruction Site", "The Prescience of Dawn", and "Our Retired Explorer (Dines With Michel Foucault in Paris, 1961)".

5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar CD, Stellar Band, April 29 2004
By

I thought the Weakerthans weren't going to top the wonderful imagery and simplicity of Left and Leaving. I was pleasantly suprised to find that they'd managed to outdo it by leaps and bounds.

The Weakerthans manage to convey more emotion in a single chord than most bands do in an entire song. None of the songs sound the same; the band dabbles in a variety of genres to keep listeners interested. John K. Samson's lyrics just keep getting better. An astute observer and social critic, he's got a knack for expressing the simplest thoughts in a dynamic, literate manner.

Worth buying alone for the lyrical content; the tight, slick musicianship only sweetens the deal.
