If you saw this series as originally televised, then you won't necessarily appreciate the changes they made for this North American release.
In the UK version you will get the original opening sequence of Lister painting the outside of the ship with the more subdued music and mood. When first seen you don't know if the show will be a drama or something else. It's only when the first ridiculous lines between Lister and Rimmer that you realize this is a off-the-wall comedy. Maybe you prefer to know right from the intro that it's a comedy, but I prefer to let a show throw a curve-ball and keep you guessing until you start laughing spontaneously.
This remastered edition (North American) also has too many "interruptions" with Holly's face (an older Holly) filling the screen. The original UK version doesn't have that. Holly is an image on the monitor in the scene and you get to see Lister or Rimmer's expressions (as you were meant to.)
Obviously, I'm biased and like things to stay the same. I find it less enjoyable to watch the "remastered" version of a great show that did not need these "improvements." Of course, the UK Version won't play on a North American DVD player, but it's easy enough to purchase a universal DVD player, then you are not "held hostage" by the producers.
