First of all, I will plead with those reading this review to IGNORE the other customer reviews that claim that the original opening sequence is missing. It simply isn't true!

For years I have put off buying this complete set due to those reviews saying that the Original "Ship Painting" opening sequence has been removed, along with reviews that say Holly's screen part's have been altered or chopped up........NOT TRUE either.

This set is the BBC release, and just like the original aired series, the famous Opening Sequence with the guy in the space suit (Lister we presume) Standing in the middle of a Giant red letter "F" painting the outside of the ship while the Brilliant instrumental opening theme song plays in the background is fully intact and plays during the first 2 seasons, just as it did in the original airings.

Once we get to Season 3, the opening of the show changes just like it did in the original BBC airing of the show as well. Holly's part's are also all intact and unaltered. So why people have been Lying in their reviews of this set is beyond me.

Anyhow, glad I finally bought it after realizing the BBC would not be releasing a Blue Ray version anytime soon. Each season contains 2 discs. One of the shows, and the other for the extras. All the episodes play in their original format and are just brilliant to watch. It's the only show that I have watched that has been made over such a long period of time. It has taken the BBC 25 years to make 10 seasons of Red Dwarf, with an 11th season set to start shooting in October of 2014. It appears

Along with this set, I purchased the 9th season (which consists of only 3 episodes, but are well worth it) and 10th seasons, which were available on Blue Ray separately.

This one grows on you, and like most great Britcoms, you can watch them over and over and they never get old. This is Si-Fi the way it was ment to be, not to taken serious what so ever! I bought each series one at a time...Don't bother, get them all, every series has some outstanding shows, led by a wonderful cast that showcased the multi talented Chris Barrie.

If you saw this series as originally televised, then you won't necessarily appreciate the changes they made for this North American release.

In the UK version you will get the original opening sequence of Lister painting the outside of the ship with the more subdued music and mood. When first seen you don't know if the show will be a drama or something else. It's only when the first ridiculous lines between Lister and Rimmer that you realize this is a off-the-wall comedy. Maybe you prefer to know right from the intro that it's a comedy, but I prefer to let a show throw a curve-ball and keep you guessing until you start laughing spontaneously.

This remastered edition (North American) also has too many "interruptions" with Holly's face (an older Holly) filling the screen. The original UK version doesn't have that. Holly is an image on the monitor in the scene and you get to see Lister or Rimmer's expressions (as you were meant to.)

Obviously, I'm biased and like things to stay the same. I find it less enjoyable to watch the "remastered" version of a great show that did not need these "improvements." Of course, the UK Version won't play on a North American DVD player, but it's easy enough to purchase a universal DVD player, then you are not "held hostage" by the producers.

A parody of Star Trek and Sci-Fi in general, the way that only the British can do it. The show really grows on every level season by season until you end up somewhere quite superior from where you started. This series was never concluded, sadly. Perhaps one day they should make a Red Dwarf movie and do just that! There are classic comedic characters here ... the last human in the Universe, and not exactly our best representitive either. And his evolved humanoid cat, an android who carries his heart on his sleeve and an accountant-like hologram with a big 'H' on his forehead just so you don't forget. If you love Sci-Fi you should laugh your circuits out with this show. Its best quality perhaps is its innovation. You can never tie it down with saying 'this show is about this' or is 'kinda like that'. With "Red Dwarf" you never know what to expect, but you know it will be funny!

A true gem in television, one to get lost in.

Update: Red Dwarf later returned to the air with a three-part series called "Back to Earth" in 2009 and then with a 10'th season in 2012.

What a great show! There is a second disc of extras for every season with new features along with the old ones (the 'smeg-ups' are the best!)

I agree that you should ignore the other customer reviews that claim that the original opening sequence is missing or that this is a modified north american version.

This set is the BBC release that I watched and loved many years ago, including the openings sequence in seasons 1 and 2.
Truly enjoyable and many hours of laughter.
