After watching low-grade b-movies like "Deathstalker" and "Barbarian Queen" it was refreshing to watch a high quality fantasy production like "Red Sonja". The writing, directing, acting, extras, set design, costumes, hair design, photography, FX and music are all superior to such low-grade films. Yet when I look at reviews of this film all I see is "Spectacularly silly" and "Hilariously awful". I'd agree that "Red Sonja" is not a perfect film: the story could have added more character development and Nielsen's performance could have been more convincing. But I'd still argue that it stands far above the majority of low-budget fantasy flicks out there.

I'm not sure what the reason was for the over-reaction of Hollywood critics regarding this film. Nielson was nominated for Raspberry awards for worst actress and worst new star, and shockingly Sandahl Bergman was nominated for worst supporting actress for her enigmatic performance as Queen Gedren. These people should have seen the "Deathstalker" films! See what I mean about overreaction? The film might have disappointed people's high expectations but that doesn't make it an "hilariously awful" film. Maybe their gripe was that Schwarzenegger wasn't the star. Oh well.

"Red Sonya" is a fun and entertaining film for fans of sword & sorcery, and outside "Conan the Barbarian" (with Schwarzenegger) I'm not sure it gets any better than this. It's imaginative, lively and fun, with likeable characters and high adventure. Tall tail balances well with gritty realism. Drama is balanced with humour. Battle scenes are well done and the swords are awesome. Watch and enjoy!

You need to prepare you self for this movie; move the furniture out of the way and send the cats out of the room. Or they maybe victims of sword play.

Yep you guessed it Arnie (Hercules in New York) is back and he is talking. Toss in Brigitte Nielson and a sprinkle of the evil Sandahl Bergman. And you have an afternoon of fun and revenge.

Seems there is the talisman (some glowy plastic thing) that only women can touch. If it gets too much light it will destroy the world. It is captured by a dark queen with great ambition. Red Sonja, who hates men, must team up with Kalidor (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to make sure the talisman is properly disposed of before it destroys the world. They have many trials and tribulations along the way. Will they succeed?

Ever since seeing this movie when it first came out, back in the day...I've been hooked. Above all else, it has been my favorite and so hard to find, too. So, seeing it here is definitely a great thing for me.
The movie focuses on strength, both mental and physical. An internal and external battle for the leading lady, Red Sonja who battles her way to fight Queen Gedren to avenge the deaths of her brother, sister, mother, and father. Along side of Red Sonja is notorious fighter, Kalidor. With Kalidor and two unlikely heroes, Red Sonja battles through this action/adventure five-star hit movie. The story is based on the writings of Robert E. Howard, author of Conan.
Brigitte Nielson really plays the part incredibly. Not bad for a "Rocky IV" and "Cobra" star and ex-Stallone wife, but she certainly can take on the action role. And even more impressive was Schwarzenegger (who needs no introduction) acting along side another action star, female at that.
There are several other actors worth recognition for their roles in the movie: for instance, Queen Gedren, played by Sandahl Bergman whom has played many other movies, such as "Conan the Barbarian". Falkon, played by Paul Smith who has been seen in many films like the new release: "Monsters Ball", the original "Dune", 1965's "The Great Race" and many more dating back to 1936. Ikol, played by Ronald Lacey from "Yellowbeard" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark". And let us not forget Pat Roach (Brytag) seen in an array of movies including all three Indiana Jones, "Kull the Conqueror," "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," "Conan the Destroyer," and "Clash of the Titans."
With this ensemble cast, how can you go wrong with the movie?

We used to rent this movie every week because my brother and I were enthralled by it. From a similiar era as Conan The Barbarian (also with Arnold), the movie continues the development of Arnold as an actor and gives Brigitte one of her rare movie appearances. A definite cult classic, which everyone should see at least once in their life! :)

This is just a very sloppy movie.
Example:
When Sonja's sister dies, look closely. Just as Kalidor puts a hand on Sonja's shoulder the corpse blinks. Then, when Sonja lies across the body and cries, you can see the dead girl breathe.
Why is it that after leaving the swordsman training grounds with Kalidor and apparently travelling with him for several miles, she STILL doesn't know his name until her sister semi-dies?
When Kalidor picks up Tarn while duelling with Sonja you can TOTALLY see the string supporting the kid. It just LOOKS like Kalidor is holding him up with one hand.
The High Priestess, the one with the golden armpit shields, is killed by a throwing star you can SO tell did not even pierce her chestplate
Very sloppy and I must agree about the soundtrack but that's not to say it is not entertaining. Buy this movie, it's probably the MOST entertaining, and unintentionally funny thing you'll ever see.
PS Is it just me or does the Talisman look like a radioactive pickle jar. Oh,and I LOVED the wax heads. And the spandex!
