Book Description

March 27 2012

Short-Listed for the 2013 Heritage Toronto Award

In 1812, the future of British North America hung in the balance as the United States declared war with the avowed goal of conquering the Canadas and removing British influence from the continent forever.

In response, a corps of men, drawn from every walk of life and social stratum of Upper Canada, stepped forward to defend their fledgling colony by volunteering to serve in the Battalion of Incorporated Militia of Upper Canada. After undergoing rigorous training, and fighting with distinction in numerous skirmishes and battles, it earned the prestigious battle honour Niagara. The regiment was disbanded at the conclusion of the war, and with the passage of time, its dedicated service and efforts have faded into the dust of histories written about the War of 1812.

Redcoated Ploughboys brings the story of this regiment, and the men who served in it, back to life, revealing a fascinating lost chapter in Canada's early military history.

Review

Redcoated Ploughboys is a well researched, written and illustrated book that is a model of regimental history. It will appeal to the professional historian, the re-enacting and wargaming communities -- and the casual reader. Highly recommended (Donald E. Graves)

The author gives us the story of the IMUC in one volume for everyone to enjoy, but has made it much more than a history book. I found it hard to put down and recommend it to anybody wanting to discover an account with a Canadian perspective on the War of 1812. Yes, we couldn't had defeated the invaders without the British regulars, but the IMUC proved their worth and their ability to stand beside them.

I'm looking forward to his next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Redcoated Ploughboys June 10 2012

I read this book on the recommendation of a history buff friend. I was not too familiar with the 1812 war - only what is found in school history books - but, after reading this, it has whetted my appetite to know more. I found the book engrossing, enlightening and very easy to read. It sweeps you along as the war progresses. The style in which it is written is more like reading an historical novel rather than a 'dusty historical' school book. The extensive maps and pictures lend clarity to the written words, making them all the more relevant to the subject.

I am not a professional reviewer but just a reader who recommends this book to anyone who wishes to have a more intensive knowledge of the War of 1812.

I see he has further books being released later this year and next year. I look forward to reading them.
