Great for some types of music, April 26 2012

I play brushes a lot, and my preferred kind are retractable to protect the wires and also to allow me to set the fan width. The Regal Tip® BR-584W Ed Thigpen Wood / Rubber Handle, Retractable Wire Brush-Single Pair is my favorite, and when I was using fixed brushes in the past I used RegalTip 593C Regal Brushes Clay Cameron.
The reason I started using this model for some playing situations is the taps are full and the sweeps have a sound quality I cannot get from my favorite brushes. Also, the thin handle (I am sure it's not over .5 inches in diameter) allows me to effortlessly sweep in a larger pattern for faster tempos, something that a heavier, multi-purpose brush will not do well,
Interestingly, the bristles are super thin (compared to other models in the RegalTip line), which may account for the speed with which they can be swept across a head in a relatively wide arc during fast tempo songs. The bristles are about on par with the RegalTip 505-YJ Yellow Jkt Throw Brush, but the overall brush responds quicker because of the thin and light, fixed wood handle.
These brushes do not always come with me when I am playing. I have a bag that accommodates the plastic tubes fixed brushes ship in for playing situations that I know are going to be jazz only. The bag, by the way, is Reunion Blues Extra Large Stick & Mallet Bag, Chestnut Brown Leather, and you can read my review and view my customer-supplied photos to find out why that bag is useful for certain situations.
Overall, I use RegapTip brushes exclusively (although I use Pro-Mark sticks exclusively), and this brush is one of a handful of models that I routinely use. It is not for general playing (at least not for me), but works well for the types of playing I mentioned. You may find even more uses for it.

Very Versatile Brush, April 14 2011

Like all Regal products, very well made. I use this particular brush for Latin feels, as the wood handle sounds great as a cross stick clave' sound. For most other work, I prefer a heavier rubber coated model. Non- retractable means the bristles can become bent over time, but I keep mine in a plastic tube when not in use, but the positive side is they do not, and cannot, rattle. Only complaint is that the handles could be a little thicker, otherwise highly recommended.
