This review is from: The Regency Lords & Ladies Collection Vol. 6. (Paperback)
While I saw that both prior reviews of this book only referred to the first story, "Mistress or Marriage" which I enjoyed quite well, than you. However, I stayed up late to finish reading the second story "A Roguish Gentleman" by Mary Brendan. It appears I have found a new (to me, at least) author to read!
Lady Elizabeth Rowe was the subject of a Regency scandal ten years prior. Viscount Stratton is owed money by Elizabeth's family, and the only way he can get the money is to marry Elizabeth for her dowry. Elizabeth does not want to marry at all. The plot is spiced up by the most conniving grandmother! (OK, she's a love, too) I loved the depth of the Ms Brendan's characterizations, her realistic dialogue, and her insight into the mind of someone who has gone through emotional trauma. The lesser characters have just the right amount of "time" and variation in type (from nice to downright nasty) in the novel, and each affect the outcome of the story. Oh yes, they marry, but you will enjoy all the twists and turns of the story.
