This book covers the design of main reinforced concrete structural members in accordance with the limit states design method, and is based on the new CSA Standard A23.3-04 Design of Concrete Structures. The load provisions are consistent with the National Building Code of Canada 2005.
The material in this book is presented in the logical order in which structural design would be performed in practice. The book takes a non-calculus based, practical approach to the analysis and design of reinforced concrete members, rather than a high-level theoretical approach. The authors use modern analysis and design procedures that are consistent with good design practice, teaching, research, and consulting experience related to structural design and rehabilitation of concrete and masonry structures, including buildings, municipal and industrial facilities.
John Pao, MEng, PEng, Struct.Eng, is the President of Bogdonov Pao Associates Ltd. of Vancouver, BC, and BPA Group of Companies with offices in Seattle and Los Angeles. Mr. Pao has extensive consulting experience related to design of reinforced concrete buildings, including high-rise residential and office buildings, shopping centers, parking garages, and institutional buildings.
The book is a collaborative effort between an academic and a practising engineer and reflects their unique perspectives on the subject.
Svetlana Brzev, Ph.D., P.Eng. is an Instructor at the Civil Engineering Department of the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Burnaby, BC. She has over 20 years of combined

I received a brand new copy of the book with a hard cover, contrary to the claim made in some reviews. It was also delivered in good shape,in a couple of days, which really surprised me. The book has been written in an easy to understand, clear, concise manner and is a great textbook with all required references to the Canadian Standards. Almost all the topics on the design of beams, slabs, and foundations etc., were discussed with great worked out examples and exercises. The only thing I missed in this book was the design of a two-way slab, for which I had to refer to other textbooks. Apart from this, it should make a great text for Canadian students!

I ordered this book twice from Amazon and twice returned it. It was advertised on their site as 'hardcover' and I twice received a softcover book. I was very disappointed since trying to keep open a 700 page softcover book is nearly impossible and quite infuriating. The content of the book however is next to none. The Canadian author highlights the main formulas used in each design, gives a concise chapter summary and always references the clause in the concrete design handbook. This book is a great reference for any civil engineering student and must have; if you can get your hands on a hardcover!
