Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Gravity has long been the problem child of physics, creating difficulties in finding a Theory of Everything. To complicate matters, most scientists believe that there is a mysterious, unidentified dark matter that makes up most of the universe, and that an equally baffling dark energy is pushing the universe apart. Moffat, an affiliate member of the cutting-edge Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada, has developed a new theory that he calls Modified Gravity (MOG). Moffat says that both Newton and Einstein were wrong, and that Newton's gravitational constant is not constant across distances as large as galaxies and galaxy clusters. Scientists haven't been able to find dark matter because it doesn't exist: MOG values help account for rates of galaxy rotation. Perhaps more revolutionary is Moffat's claim that black holes don't exist either. His theory predicts a grey star, a massive object with many but not all of the properties of a black hole. Moffat's theory thus far has withstood many objections. If MOG stands the test of time, Moffat will have created a paradigm shift not seen since Newton. Illus. (Oct.)

Review

"At last John Moffat's book is out! The voice of dissent in a sad world where every young scientist is sucking up to the dusty establishment. If you don't want to hear the same old things repeated yet again this is just the book for you. A mind-boggling foray into the odd world of gravity, straight from the mouth of the master heresiarch." (Jooao Magueijo, Professor of Physics, London, UK )

5.0 out of 5 stars Reinventing the 'matter of LIFE', Nov 11 2008
This review is from: Reinventing Gravity: A Physicist Goes Beyond Einstein (Hardcover)
For the layperson, Reinventing Gravity may not be an easy read. However, the flow of the narrative reveals interesting facts about our universe, i.e., "the matter of life" as we have come to know it.

In a systematic approach, the author challenges the status quo by offering a new theory of gravity that is solidly backed by current data without resorting to any unexplained "dark or black matter".

This fascinating book takes the reader on a historic journey - i.e., from the discovery of gravity, to the on-going research of its many associated elements - and helps to unlock the mystery of the universe!

John Moffat's new gravity theory is exciting and important to understand; let us not be bound by limited thought and imagination. Reinventing Gravity is on my Christmas gift list - I highly recommend it for your list too!

5.0 out of 5 stars A creative turning point, Feb 7 2009
By
Brian Philcox (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Reinventing Gravity: A Physicist Goes Beyond Einstein (Hardcover)
I'm still working on my second copy of John Moffat's book. I had barely started my first copy when a friend from the US arrived for a short visit. He is an inventor and a true believer in the scientific method. I knew he would enjoy John's book so I gave him my copy. This is what he wrote to me shortly after returning home:

"More to the point, I found the book truly fascinating. Its not often you get to read a lucid account about science as a process by a true scientist rather than about the facts of science whether by a scientist or a science writer. As a died in the wool contrarian, I look forward to Moffat being correct and dark matter being the most expensive null experiment in the history of mankind."

Personally, I'm finding it fascinating.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For All Who Think, Nov 10 2008

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Reinventing Gravity: A Physicist Goes Beyond Einstein (Hardcover)
A book to impress a physicist, and yet any layman such as I will find it fascinating, informative, and enjoyable to read. John Moffat has not only challenged Newton and Einstein but has presented history from Plato, Galileo, Kepler, and Copernicus to the present day in such a way to even comprehend, t=0, the beginning of our universe.
