First released in 2005 as one of Vagrant Press's inaugural titles, Lesley Crewe's debut novel, Relative Happiness, garnered rave reviews. Lesley's writing is fresh and funny, and her portrayal of the Cape Breton spirit-strong and wry in the face of adversity-is unwaveringly authentic.

Reviews for Relative Happiness:"Against the backdrop of Cape Breton's windy beaches, author Lesley Crewe delivers real people living real lives. We give her our highest kudo: we couldn't put the book down." -Aloft Magazine

"The novel is quite exceptional and shows that Crewe has the potential to become a leading author within this genre." -New Brunswick Reader

"This is Crewe's first novel and quite frankly, I'm astonished to know that. Her graceful prose and her ability to turn a familiar story into something with such raw, dramatic power are skills that many veteran novelists have yet to develop." -Halifax Chronicle Herald

Review

Relative Happiness by Lesley Crewe (Vagrant Press, $19.95, 306 pages, ISBN: 1551095491). If they still made movies of the week this would be perfect material for one. With a beautiful cover designed by Margaret Issenman, we have here a fast-paced story set in the Maritimes about four sisters, their parents, assorted friends, lovers, and sweethearts. There are weddings, funerals, births, affairs, and betrayals. And virtually everyone cries, frequently, which makes it very difficult to believe that there are such emotional families.
Lexie, the unmarried librarian, invites a young stranger to board in her large home. She falls in love with him, but he, like Heathcliff, takes long brooding walks on the beach and obviously has a dark secret. Then Lexie's slutty sister appears and the young man disappears with her. Lexie meets a Harlequin-romance handsome hunk. They have a fling, and he leaves for Alaska not knowing Lexie is pregnant. Another sister loses a new-born, the baby's father has an affair and then dies. Lexie has a baby and the first young man returns from fulfilling an obligation in Africa and announces that he loves her. The Harlequin hunk returns and both men want to marry Lexie. Who will she choose? If you like this sort of thing, it can be read in an hour, and might just leave you with a little tear of happiness in your eye.

Her graceful prose and her ability to turn a familiar story into something with such raw dramatic power are skills many vetran novelists have yet to develop. -- The Chronicle Herald

“A realistic and heart-warming story that will keep you turning the pages until the very end! Lesley Crewe is surely on the way to the bestseller list.” -- Rosie Goodwin --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book from Lesley Crewe! Mar 3 2009

Relative Happiness is the second book I have read by Lesley Crewe (the other being Ava Comes Home). This was another delightful book from this author. Crewe wastes no time in introducing entertaining and interesting characters who are real in their flaws and their humour. This book is placed in Cape Breton and it offered a genuine look at life on this sea-swept island. I didn't want to put this one down. While a few things are perhaps expected by the reader, there were several twists and turns that were completely unexpected and added to the depth of the story. Crewe has become one of my favourite Canadian authors. On to her next book, Shoot Me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty and Funny Mar 11 2013

It's a first novel but it's written from the heart. The five main characters are women, four sisters and their mother. Its about the relationships within a family. It's a comedy but with some heartbreaking moments, as in life. The writer really understands women. I enjoyed it a lot.

1.0 out of 5 stars Read one chapter, can't read any more... Dec 19 2008

Hi, I'm all for supporting local authors, and as I'm from NS, I thought I'd give this a try. Reading the back cover had me fairly interested, I thought it would be an intelligent chick-lit type story. No. I have read 20 pages, and can't read one more sentence....it's not chick lit, it's not literary fiction, I'm not sure what it is. The language is stilted, the main character's voice does not ring true, it's just OFF. There are even typos and grammatical errors. Give this one a pass!
