4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read, Mar 11 2002

Layla Halabi (Dubai - UAE) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Reluctant Bride (Paperback)
The story, is of course completely implausible, but the characters are so very funny, that you just don't care. Josephine is struggling to get her family out of debt, and the family is struggling to get her to marry the fabulously wealthy and fabulously eligible Alexander. Josephine refuses Alexander's suit and he, of course, feels obliged to help her out of her troubles, which includes researching how to be a mistress and masquerading as a man to gamble in a hell.

This is a funny book. The scene where he goes to propose to Josephine is probably among the funniest you're likely to read outside of a Heyer book. The humor is fantastic and the storyline will grip you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fun book by Cindy Holbrook!, Nov 29 2000

This review is from: Reluctant Bride (Paperback)
I found myself laughing out loud on an airplne to Hawaii with people staring at me. Poor Josephine got herself into so many hilarious situations that only Ms. Holbrook could think-up. What a mess she was! I'm not normally a Romance/Historical reader, but I just love Cindy's books. You should check out some of her others, too. I particularly enjoyed Lord Sayer's Ghost.

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT ONE OF HOLBROOKS BEST, Mar 26 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Reluctant Bride (Paperback)
I have followed Cindy Holbrook since Lady Megan's Masquerade. Sad to say that that was her best book. I haven't seen anything from her that I liked since. Although I did enjoy Country Gentleman, I have been disappointed with her recent books including this one. I didn't not like the heroine who was an idiot- she was clueless about "protection." The hero at this time is still making rounds at his mistress. The two had no chemistry and I was hoping they would not get together. Her first two books reflected some emotions and thoughts from the main characters but I found that lacking in her subsequent books. The characters do find themselves in some strange and funny situations but I certainly didn't find it romantic because that was the tone of the entire book. Her best two books were "Lady Megan's Masquerade" and "A Suitable Connection." Skip this book
