Review

"The lovely, layered worlds Vonarburg presents are like a shifting kaleidoscope wrought of dream and the very human urge to journey towards reality’s core. The book lives in details, slowly, richly ... worth the reading and deeply science-fictional." - Kathleen Ann Goonan, New York Review of Science Fiction -

Product Description

Witnessing strange and unexplainable changes in her once-familiar Montreal home, Catherine Rhymer fears for her sanity until the arrest of two students puts her on the trail of a secret revolutionary movement. Now Catherine must embark on a voyage of discovery, travelling north in search of the truth about her world. She will journey through hail and snow and herds of grazing beasts to a confrontation with the originators of her reality. Enter a new world on the edge of sanity from Élisabeth Vonarburg, the Grand Dame of Canadian SF.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking speculative fiction, July 9 1998
By A Customer
Vornarburg's book, translated by Jane Brierly, is a satisfying, thought-provoking journey into multiple alternative realities. I loved it! It starts off a bit slow, but it's worth sticking it out through the first few chapters as you, along with the main character, slowly begin to get your bearings in a world subtly off-kilter. The questions raised are answered, but in thouroughly unexpected ways. It's not really fantasy, not really sci-fi-- rather, it fits solidly into the realms of speculative fiction, the kind that truly makes the world strange.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reality isn't real, but then what is ? Handle with CARE., May 22 1996
By A Customer
The world isn't always what it seems (is it ever ?) This tale brings the story of Katherine who finds herself in a world that can't be true, yet insists on existing. Is the world unraveling, or is it only you, because you it is, pulled right into the story by the sheer force of Vonarburgs' beautiful style. Have you ever doubted your sanity !? then you'll understand what Katherine is going through, if you haven't, hold on tight for the ride of your life. You just might need that straight jacket (not included), by the time you put this book down, or you might have a much clearer view of the world. Comes with an ending that will blow you down.
