The Rogue Angel series has been running about two years now. Its an awesome series about a woman named Annja Creed who adopts Joan of Arc's mystical sword. The series has some good twists and turns while telling some great stories.
This collection is larger than the previously released issues. It combines the first 3 books in the series, looking more like "parts" or "volumes". If you already own the 3 seperate books, there is nothing extra here except a new cover. However, if you are a collector, or new to the series, this is a great item to buy.
This book allows new readers to join the series easily, and CHEAPER than buying the 3 books individually.
If you are even remotely interested in the series, I would tell you to buy this book. Get started and join the club of avid Rogue Angel readers.

ROGUE ANGEL OMMIBUS: FIRST THREE BOOKS IN THE SERIES, July 19 2008

As most of you know by now, this omnibus book contains three books, the first 3 novels in the ongoing ROGUE ANGEL series. The series rests at present at about 13 novels in total. The first 3 novels encased within this omnibus are: Destiny, Solomon's Jar, and The Spider Stone. For readers such as myself who held off reading this series, an omnibus such as this is not only economical but allows us to sample the series through a trio of its first stories.
I have shelves full of GOLD EAGLE books receiving 4 new ones through the mail ever other month. My collection goes back to the mid 1980s, but in all that time I have never seen another series such as this. At first I was sceptical but after reading the first story in this omnibus, I knew that GOLD EAGLE had another action adventure success on their hands. The Alex Archer name is probably a "house name" with each novel assigned out to various writers. And the difference in writing styles among the three books in this omnibus causes me to feel strongly that is the case. For example, while the first story (Destiny) flows smoothly along to pull the reader quickly in, the second story (Solomon's Jar) has an uneven beginning with some confusing aspects to it. With this in mind, and the manner in which the other GOLD EAGLES are authored, I expect 3 different writers for these 3 books.
I have the omnibus edition and interestingly this series of books is listed as 'science fiction' on the book's spine. And I find the curious mix of Joan of Arc's sword and modern day adventure very riveting. Since the main character, Annja Creed, is an archaeologist, my major in college, it allows the books to be placed throughout the world wherever artifacts and past cultures have abode.
If you enjoy science fiction, history, or archaeology, maybe these books are something to bring enjoyment to your reading agenda. To reiterate, the 14th ROGUE ANGEL entitled THE GOLDEN ELEPHANT rolls of the presses in September, 2008, with #15 SWORDSMANS LEGACY due out in November, 2008.

So, as an avid urban fantasy junkie I bought this book with some trepidation. Happily, it did not disappoint entirely. The plot is imaginative and the writing did not distract me from the clever goings on. Overall it was an easy read, and I mostly enjoyed reading all three novels, taking only a few days, which is always a good sign.
That said, I confess that I was a little disappointed with the protagonist. I really enjoy the anti-heroine of the typical urban fantasy novel, the smart and sassy supernaturally gifted woman who can kick butt when she has to but who has vulnerabilities that allow us to identify with her. In this novel, Annja Creed was superstrong, super smart, spoke multiple languages with a distressing (to me as a linguist) ease, was voluptuous, independent, proud, powerful, beautiful and even slightly famous (she has a TV job). In short, she was more of a stock character that a true protagonist, a female James Bond, a Laura Croft, with none of the endearing vulnerabilities and quirks than I enjoy.
So, if you are a huge fan of Laura Croft or of superspy novels that tell the tale of heroes or heroines who can do anything, then this is definitely a book for you to enjoy. The plots are well paced and never drag. Personally, I haven't elected to read any of the subsequent novels. No knock on Archer's writing skill. I just like my urban fantasy served up with a bit more character, or perhaps a different style of character, I should say.
