Jake Doyle is back on the streets of St John's.
It tries to be tough but its not, it is a comedy and a lot fun. The plots are full of holes and loose ends but it goes at such a pace you do not mind. Alan Hawco's energy drives it at full throttle to compensate.
Sean McGinley brings the show gravitas and makes the acting believable. As characters Tinny and Des give the show some depth. Des is a bit too dopey at times but he is essential to the show. Tinny is actually a believable character played with honesty. Just watched the first two episodes. lets hope Rose gets back to more crime solving than home making.

Kristen Pellerin has a new harder 'ice' to her part.

It does seemed rushed at times so the serious parts do not always seem to build any real tension but the comedy comes through to rescue the story line. If there are any faults it is the see saw nature between these two themes.

You can see where the advert breaks are meant to go in the plot lines when viewed straight through on DVD. Perhaps these are built in to the rhythm of the script and the tension may suffer because of it.

Alan Hawco writes up the Jake Doyle character more like Johnny Dangerously than Emile Cinq Mars but aiming for the John Farrow creation would make it a different show. Look forward to series 5.

Go Canada!

A very entertaining and upbeat comedy drama with the best things being Alan Hawco, the script and the location of St Johns. It's a formula that he gets the case, gets the girl, messes up, gets beaten up and then solves the case but loses the girl. It's a standing joke the number of times he gets punched. Who cares? The acting is generally top class, the script is smart, the storylines are interesting and a bit different and Alan Hawco is very watchable Best eyes on TV. My only quibble is that some of the recurring guest characters are a bit formulaic and irritating, especially Steele the writer but maybe that's because of a certain amount of overacting of the part which is really not required. In some cases less is more, like the Russell Crowe episode. Such a laid back dude and you really didn't know if he was a good guy or the bad. It could also be that Alan Hawco is multi tasking too much and should get a good director who can see the fine line between Comedy and caricature, watch out Des, All the same, It's got the feel good factor without schmaltz and will bear rewatching. Good music too.

Jake and his family are once again providing good old fashioned entertainment. Allan Hawco is as handsome as ever and I'm still considering asking my youngest son if we can rename him Malachy. Fabulous, ROD fans!

I get every season of Republic of Doyle. One because I really like the show and Alan Hawco is very easy on the eyes. Alan is a great Canadian and loves what he does and it shows. Not as intense as some of the other crime shows but a really nice change. It also gives you really nice pictures of Newfoundland.
