If you value the drama and terror of Giuseppe Verdi's sacred masterpiece, you need to hear this. Solti's "Dies Irae" is overwhelming, the drums pounding and the chorus sounding as if it's writhing in hell's torments. What Solti's intense, operatic conception lacks in spirituality it more than makes up for in the way it grips you by the throat and never lets go. The solo quartet, with one exception, is among the best assembled in the stereo era. Pavarotti shines, and Talvela's authoritative basso profundo is a rock-solid anchor. Horne's trademark register break can be a distraction at times, but she's thrilling. With a more idiomatic soprano, this would have been an unbeatable foursome, but Sutherland is sadly miscast here, most damagingly in the "Libera me." Sonics were demonstration quality in their day and are still competitive with the best. For a more devotional approach, Giulini is a good choice. Vintage performances by Toscanini (RCA and Music & Arts) and Serafin on Pearl (the latter with a true golden age vocal quartet) are desirable, as are stereo versions by Daniel Barenboim on Teldec and Robert Shaw on Telarc. Solti's remake for RCA is less attractive; you can't go wrong with this one. --Dan Davis

5.0 out of 5 stars The best! Jun 27 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This rendition is by far the most powerful and attractive I've heard on either LP or CD. True, the Decca engineers did monkey a bit with the sound, but what a result! If the "Dies Irae" doesn't sound like hell's fury, then you're either already dead or haven't got the headphones properly plugged in. A long-time favorite that continues to surpass its contenders and delivers a truly cathartic experience with each and every listening. Five stars to be sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect Jun 17 2004
Format:Audio CD
This is a dramatic recording of a dramatic work. Everyone who listens to this recording will recognize the Dies Irae: one of the most famous choral pieces of all time. This is the loudest, most dramatic Dies Irae I have ever heard. The timpanis pound, the horns blast, and the flying screams of the flutes and violins are AMAZING!

An equally dramatic but decidedly less terrifying movement of this Requiem is the Sanctus. The piece begins with three bombastic chords, growing each time as voices are added. The beautiful middle section and the ascending and descending half steps at the end make for the most glorious Sanctus from any Requiem save Durufle's.

The reason I say almost perfect is that there are a few aspects of this recording that fall short. Madame Joan Sutherland has a beautiful voice, and her voice soars to those high notes perfectly, but her diction leaves something to be desired. She occassionally sings words that are all vowel and no consonant. Sir George Solti drives the orchestra forward in a quick pace that is almost always appropriate, but is sometimes too fast: at changes of tempo, the chorus takes 2-3 beats to catch up to the orchestra.

Do not let these drawbacks stop you from ordering this recording; it is much better than the surprisingly dissappointing recording with Renee Fleming, and more dramatic than the Robert Shaw recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Jan 4 2004
Format:Audio CD
While I have only had the opportunity to hear one other version of this piece (Shaw/Atl) I can confidently say this recording does not disapoint. The quartet--which interestingly highlights the bass and mezzo more than the tenor and soprano, I think--is fantastic, as is the chorus, orchestra, and conducting. If this recording could be said to have any flaws, it would be, of course, Suthland's diction; also, Horne's singing is a matter of taste. Personaly, I think there is nothing in the world like those tenoresque lines in the "Liber scriptus." Every word sung by Tavela is beautiful, but I'd have to say the most heartstopping moment is Pavorotti's entrance in the Kyrie--it is absolutely breathtaking.
