This beginning biblical studies text introduces students to readings of both the Old and New Testament. The authors use an "intertextuality" approach, exploring the Bible by examining individual pieces in depth and considering their relevance and development. This alternative approach to looking at the breadth of the bible—starting with Genesis and moving as far forward as time allows—is gaining popularity in biblical studies, especially with more serious biblical scholars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intertextual study of the bible helpful Sep 23 1999

As a student at William Jewell college I have read this text several times. I find that Chance and Horne's survey of the Bible provides an intriguing departure point for further biblical study, be it of a historiocritical or theological nature.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey Sep 18 2007
By Michael B. Dick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have used their book Rereading the Bible in my Introduction to the Bible Class for three years and I have found it excellent. Their thesis about how different ages re-read the Bible and interpret it to meet their new needs is superb as an organizing framework. The reading of texts is nuanced. It does need a sympathetic teacher to help students over problems. Students approach the Bible with a very simplistic outlook (this is true of any written document), so it is important for a knowledgeable professor to help them through this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two credible scholars Mar 8 2007
By James Hill - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
These two authors are respected scholars in the field and have considerable experience teaching biblical studies in one of the finest undergraduate schools of religion in the Midwest. The previous review clearly has been colored by a strong fundamentalist bias -- and coming from a student at Southwest Baptist Univ., rather than William Jewell College, this is not surprising.

This approach (utilized and advocated by Chance and Horne) to biblical studies, as apposed to a surface survey approach, provides a much more valuable examination of scripture.
