Phenomenal movie, one of the best of the year. Bale continues his astounding acting streak with this movie. The physical rigours he must have gone through during the making of this film are painfully and realistically rendered on his haggard face. This movie will satisfy many; those who like war films, those who like jungle adventures, and those who want to witness an Oscar worthy performance. Another fine film from Herzog, the German director of "Aguire, the wrath of god". If you loved this movie, then get Aguire as well.
This is a movie that I really enjoyed; it vividly and painfully recreates the brutal ordeal of trying to survive in a Vietnamese POW camp. The acting and writing are both top notch with the supporting cast (especially Steve Zahn) being the standouts. As with most movies dealing with war and history there are some historical inaccuracies but they don't ruin the film.
The video quality is fantastic and by far the greatest selling point for this Blu-Ray. Colors are well saturated and vivid especially with all the foliage around and within the deep jungle. Black levels and contrast are excellent. Audio is solid as well with great jungle ambiance that definitely adds to the film's realism. There are even some good extras which include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, and a 5-part making of documentary among other things.
If you're a fan of the movie I definitely recommend this Blu-Ray, it has great video and audio, it's a great addition to anyone's high-def collection.
You can read the synopsis elsewhere so I won't spoil it but the casting was spot on and the cinematography is superb esp. from the opening bombing raid
sequence through to when Bale gets captured.
Also, fans of the TV series "Lost" watch for the Darma Intiative's boss in a bit part and Faraday as the yin to Bale's yang in the POW camp.
The extras are well worth the price of the DVD as you get about 45 minutes of how the actors got that POW look, how Herzog threw himself into the task, how the jungle is truly a "character" in the movie and the true story of how the real Dieter Dengler shows how an optimistic outlook on life can truly be lifesaving.
If I could give this more than five stars, I would.
On another topic, what's with the price point i.e. $30.44CAN. As of November 03, 2007 the Canadian dollar was almost $1.05US yet this item is selling for $19.99 on Amazon.com? I'm at a loss to understand the significant differences in Canadian and American prices throughout the entire Amazon catalogue. Over the past several years I have spent thousand$ (books, CD's and DVDs) on Amazon.ca but will be significantly curtailing future spending until this issue is addressed.
