Product Description

Though research methods courses for specific areas of psychology are becoming increasingly common at colleges and universities, most available books are general, applicable to any area of psychology. Dunn (Moravian College) provides an introduction to all of the usual research methods topics (e.g., choosing a research question, strategies of investigation, data analysis techniques) using examples from social psychology. Though the concepts Dunn covers are the same as those covered in most research-methods textbooks, the frequent mention of famous social psychology experiments and eminent social psychologists adds to the presentation and may motivate students engaged in the study of social psychology. In addition, Dunn's prose is clear and accessible, and the book's visual formatting is straightforward rather than flashy. Though intended primarily as a textbook, this volume would also be a welcome addition to a library's holdings. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and graduate students. -- B. J. Lovett, Elmira College (Choice, February 2009)

"Dana Dunn has a knack for thinking and writing about psychology--a knack that will make this text an instant success."
Daniel M. Wegner, Harvard University

"A lively, hands-on adventure showing how psychological scientists discover truths about humans’ social nature, this student-friendly book draws the reader into active learning. Focused on “practical theory,” Dunn highlights issues current and appealing to both novice researchers and seasoned teachers."
Susan T. Fiske, Princeton University

I taught a senior thesis course on experimental social psychology for the first time this semester as a graduate instructor and this book was very helpful! Unfortunately, it was too late in the semester to assign this book to my students, but I used it extensively to create my lectures and assignments. I will definitely consider making this book required for my students if I teach this course again in the future. If I had to choose between assigning this book and the APA Style Manual, I have to say, I would choose this one :). There is already plenty of free information about the APA style on the internet.

This book includes detailed descriptions of all parts of experimental research, from deciding what to research, designing an experiment, writing up a report, and presenting the findings. It was easy to flip through the book to find information on specific stages of research. Also, I think this book is easy to read--not overwhelming for undergrads.

The only thing that would make this book even more comprehensive is a more detailed section on data analysis using SPSS, but this is a very minor issue, as plenty of books already exist on using SPSS.

I'm hoping that this book would be printed in paperback in the future or would otherwise go down in price.
