This review is from: Resident Evil: Afterlife (DVD)
If you've been following this franchise, you already know two things: where the story is going, and how relatively dissimilar the storyline is from the games. That said, this is a rather different movie from its predecessors.Up until now, Paul W.S. Anderson's cinematic vision has been logically focused on a tight narrative around his character, Alice, in a Resident Evil universe comprised of a very large, multinational conglomerate known as The Umbrella Group, or more simply, Umbrella. Starting from the beginning, Alice, a special agent of Umbrella, learns that her employer is engaged in unethical and illegal biotech engineering that has now breached its boundaries, thanks to industrial espionage, and is now experimenting on the world unilaterally. A series of viruses have been introduced that simultaneously kills and re-animates life and much later takes over lives. This starts with zombies but progressively leads to much more deadly life-forms. In this sequel, Alice has watched her own facility be breached, lived through Umbrella's betrayal of mankind, watched the world's populace seemingly vanish, led a rag-tag group of survivors, discovered that Umbrella has placed tracking into her body, discovered that she has had clones made of herself, discovered that one man, Wesker, is seemingly behind this heinous betrayal, and now attempts to engage Umbrella and Wesker in a pre-emptive strike that will, hopefully, end Umbrella's domination. That said, this film is an action flick broken into four sequences: attacking Umbrella's HQ; returning to "Arcadia"; leading survivors in L.A.; and, exploring the rescue ship. The two concepts that I had particular interest in from their set-up in RE:Apocalypse and RE:Extinction were the war of the Alice clones, and the return of Jill Valentine, who was played by Sienna Guillory. However, these elements only played out in the first and last sequences and were not enough to be truly satisfying. Still, Paul did give us that much! The movie, subsequently, suffers from an overall lack of character development that has the effect of a massive sugar rush; thrilling you and then leaving you with a frustrating vacuum. It is really your call whether you want to pursue this or not. The breakthrough of the franchise is that it has managed to last long enough to give us something much bigger, if we are genuinely interested.

Resident Evil Afterlife,
This review is from: Resident Evil: Afterlife Bilingual [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Resident Evil Afterlife is much more intune with the games then the previous two movies. Introducing characters such as The excutioner and the infected dogs that split in half. These two characters were seen in Resident Evil 5 video game, as well as the uroburos that seems to have taken over the zombies.Overall this movie is more for Resident Evil fans then the general movie goer, but it does offer lots of action scenes and not to many scares for a Resident evil movie. Action = 8/10 Fear factor = 4/10 Overall = 7 1/2 / 10 IF you love Resident Evil you will like this movie

First) I do not have the Bluray or DVD, so I can't speak on the quality of the product, but I did watch the movie in the theaters (in 3D).Second) I have watched and enjoyed the previous 3 Resident Evil movies and I have played and enjoyed all of the primary Resident Evil games (0-5). With these two points in mind, I can honestly say that Resident Evil: Aftermath is a good movie and a good edition to the Resident Evil franchise. The most frusterating thing I hear about the Resident Evil movies is that they don't follow the game storylines. This is simply untrue. The movies fit nicely in amongst the game franchise as follows: The first movie takes place between Resident Evil 0 and 1. The second movie takes place during Resident Evil 2 and 3. The third movie takes place after Resident Evil 3. The fourth movie takes place between Resident Evil 4 and 5. Are there still some holes in the plot, sure. But they do there best with a 2 hour movie, aimed at appealing to a mass audience as well as the "fans", while staying as true to such a vast franchise as possible. The biggest difference and arguement Resident Evil game fans have is "Alice". However, I don't understand their frusteration, there's no reason an "Alice" character couldn't co-exist in the overall franchise storyline while not appearing in the games. The games don't cover the ENTIRE world at any one point! The following are a few elements to the movie that I enjoyed, without spoiling anything for you: The movie starts after Resident Evil: Extinction (I think a year later or something) and does a good job of continuing the established movie storyline. Wesker is in the movie and absolutely fantastic. There are a LOT of cool bits from the games Resident Evil 4 and 5 (primarily characters and some plot points). The fight scenes are very cool. In conclusion, I can recommend this movie to anyone who: Likes the Resident Evil franchise as a whole (and still isn't caught up on any stupid plot holes/Alice from the movie franchise). Likes the previous 3 Resident Evil movies (and I there are already rumblings of a 5th movie being made by the same group of people!). Likes action/horror movies which focus on action, gunplay, fighting, and scaring the crap out of audiences. Overall, I give the movie a 4 out of 5.
