Fun Arcade Style Shooter,
By
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (Video Game)
I bought this game a couple of weeks ago, and having played it for a while, I think it's a decent game. But before you buy the game, you must recognize that this is an arcade style, on-rails shooter (think old school games such as House of the Dead or Virtual Cop), and NOT a survival horror adventure game like RE4. This means that you have no control over where your character moves. Your viewpoint travels a pre-determined path, and you shoot zombies as they come out to attack you. As a on-rails shooter, Umbrella Chronicles is pretty fun. The Wiimote is particularly suitable for such point and shoot games, and so the controls are very intuitive. One drawback with the game design is that I personally find one-hit critical shots to be extremely hard; but when you do get a critical shot, it's definitely satisfying. The graphics are just so-so, and the music also doesn't stand out that much. However, if you're a Resident Evil fan like me, you'll like all the story-line tie-ins with the previous RE games. Game length for an initial run through is about 6 hours or so. Replay value comes from shooting all the destructible background objects to find hidden files that tells more RE back-story. Just like most on-rails shooters, this game is most fun during 2 player co-op mode. As someone who likes these types of arcade shooter games, my overall conclusion is that this game is fun, has some replay value, and RE fans will like the stories. If the critical shots weren't so hard, I'd give the game 5 stars.

Actually not that bad...,

I've seen many reviews that found this game substandard for something out of the resident evil franchise but I thought it was worth the money. The learning curve isn't that steep but it definitely takes some time getting used to the control. Personally I kept on confusing the button for weapons switching and the one for a knife. Except for the final Wesker mission ammos are plenty so you'll rarely be in desperate need of them. Especially if you're playing with someone else, you can be as trigger-happy as you want. The weapons consist of the usual variety, including a handgun with infinite ammo, shotguns (both the regular and Richard's) and machine guns. As you go along you can unlock more superior guns like a rocket launcher. It's good for final boss fights; it is way less time consuming and will contribute to getting a good result in the end. There are a few criteria in which you're examined, such as critical shots and total enemy kills. Since you can destroy almost anything in the game environment, the result takes that into account also and rewards a high count of objects destroyed. The grades range from S to C. (I haven't stumbled upon anything lower than C.) The better result you get, more stars you accumulate to improve your weapons' firepower, capacity, etc. (RE4-style.) The difficulty within the game varies according to chapters but also you can switch the overall difficulty yourself. Although the game gives you a brief summary of each game in the series, if you know the story you'll have a lot more fun because of the familiar surroundings and characters (with the same quality of lines and voice acting, which are totally lame). The game also encourages to collect documents which explain all the little (or big) mysteries behind the Umbrella corp. It's not the regular genre you'll find RE in but it's nice for a change and even non-RE fans can enjoy it. The story still has some loopholes and has new, even more obscure characters but they are excusable for the overall quality of the game.

I've played all the RE games and this one is without question the most difficult. Even on the easy setting, it's an overwhelming challenge.
