Most dystopian novels seem to run on themes of violence, hatred, and greed, but Joelle Anthony's RESTORING HARMONY isn't like most dystopian novels. It's a beautiful blend of terrific writing, strong characters, and a fast-paced plot, and the themes are more along the lines of true friendship, compassion, and the inherently good nature of human beings. Molly McClure, the main character, is someone I'd really like to know in real life! Though the plot is very good, it's Molly who drives this story. She breathes from the page! This is a fantastic book for young people, but adults will enjoy it, too.

Set in the not-so-distant future, Restoring Harmony is a page-turning tale that follows Molly on her quest to bring her grandfather back from the US to her peaceful Gulf Island home. But Anthony's 2041 is one of hard times with no oil, and Molly's journey isn't as easy as she thought--she even finds herself wrapped up in bootlegging gang activities. Is the young stranger that helps her on her way friend or foe? Can romance sparkle in a world that has Molly relying on her hard work and talents just to get through?

Music, farming, and family are three key elements in this exciting adventure. Though published as "Young Adult," it would be a shame if adults didn't take the time to enjoy it too (I know I did!). If you're looking for light--but suspenseful--reading filled with adventure, challenges, and a splash of romance, then this book is for you. Happy Page Turning!

Restoring Harmony is set 30 years in the future and yet it has an old world charm. Much of this charm comes in the character of Molly. She is a smart, sweet, independent and resourceful heroine, who finds her way through the obstacles in her path and always does her best to help others. Although the future Anthony paints is bleak, Molly, her family, and their small island community provide a sense of hope that a new life can be created if this future should ever become real.

I love Molly and I love the other characters that populate the novel. Her grumpy cynical grandfather, the funny and sweet children next door and Spill, the stranger who Molly isn't sure if she can trust but is drawn to anyway. Although the story whips along, with many twists and turns, it is the characters who make it really shine.

Restoring Harmony is a delightful read, one which will make you want to learn the fiddle, go on a road trip and hug your family. It definitely has a star spot on my bookcase.
