It Puts You in The Middle of It!,
This review is from: Restrepo (DVD)
As a trained soldier with an avid interest in all things military, and with friends in the U.S Army I'd heard good things about this documentary. If you are not able to go overseas and fight, this is about as close as you will ever get. The gritty reality of being under fire is all too apparent in this film. You almost instantly get the feeling that you're there with them, partly due to the fact that the cameraman often has to duck down too. There are a few welcome jovial moments which show the soldiers as real human beings and not just machines bent on killing. Anyone who cares about what our boys are going through, who works in an office, and pacifists should definitely watch this. It's educating. I would have paid $100 for this film!

"When I hear Restrepo, I think of the person",
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Restrepo (DVD)
The quote is from Specialist Misha Pemble-Belkin, referring to what he thinks of when he hears the word "Restrepo", which is now a documentary, and a former Observation Post (OP) manned by his Platoon in the Korengal Valley.Juan Restrepo was a Medic in his Platoon, they built the OP to take control of a large portion of the fields of fire in the valley shortly after Restrepo was killed. If you're watching for thrill a minute hollywood action, don't. A lot of times you can't see the enemy, sometimes you can see the tracers. You do see raw footage of men in combat: scared, bored, excited and sad. Do not watch the film without reading War. The film assumes you know the background, such as the aftermath of an AH-64 strike with Hellfires. In the book you read that 5 RPG's were fired from the building, the film does not explain this, focusing on the outcome. Without reading the book the subtle things, such as when they are climbing to the hooches up the valley (the footage shows Jones stopping for a moment, a voice off-camera says "Jones, you guys standing up there? You're wrong."), a dire warning made as understatement is completely missed, because you won't be expecting it. What will not be missed is the hatred in the eyes of the Afghanis, or the joy in their faces when questioning why someone won't be released when everyone has seen video footage of that person beheading people. I showed this film to friends who have never been in the military. They were not able to turn away, particularly during Rock Avalanche. This isn't pro war or anti-war. It's pro-facts. Some aren't nice.

Strange (secondary appreciation),
By S.H. (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Restrepo [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Restrepo is absolutely interesting, but one thing that struck me was just how beautiful the terrain and even the structure arrays on that terrain are. Medievally enchanting, really - classic rock outcroppings as if from Frankenstein or Dracula. A shame people see fit to kill for it/over it/upon it.
