From Booklist

Adam Dewar, a sophisticated, respectable doctor, seems an unlikely protagonist in a murder mystery, but when it involves smallpox, he is just the right person to call. After the British border patrol in Saudi Arabia discovers an infected man near death and an Iraqi doctoral candidate commits suicide in Edinburgh, Dewar connects the two incidents and deduces that the Iraqis are resurrecting the smallpox virus in order to engage in biological warfare. After that, it can only be expected, as in any thriller, that the worst will happen and it does. At times, the story is predictable and anticlimactic. What makes the story interesting, however, is the tension of the smallpox virus, which breaks out in a rowdy, drug-infested neighborhood, and Dewar's own compassion. Although the language could have easily dipped into medical and scientific mumbo-jumbo, layman's terms are primarily used so that anyone can understand the discussions. The smallpox virus may now be extinct, but good stories about it still thrive. Ellie Barta-Moran --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description

A plausible thriller about a deadly disease - smallpox - which breaks out on the densely-populated Muirhouse Estate in Edinburgh. The movement of virus fragments between UK research institutes suggests the horrific possibility that a hostile nation plans to hold the world to ransom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smallpox Unleashed on General Population April 15 2011

Investigator Dewar must determine pursuant to a WHO directive whether too many fragments of the smallpox virus are being held by research labs in the UK. He is a sci-med investigator doctor with the UK Home Office. I didn't even realize that labs could get fragments of the virus but it turns out that the virus is useful to researchers in other areas, such as AIDS research. What some of them have been doing is getting more than their allowed share of the fragments by borrowing from other researchers or taking their samples with them when they transfer to other labs. This practice has been done by one of the researchers in Dr. Malloy's lab in Edinburgh at the university who has too many fragments of it. While investigating the lab in Edinburgh, there is an actual smallpox outbreak in Edinburgh and Dewar is convinced that it must tie into the lab. Some Iraqis with ties to terrorism are in town as well and they seem to be waiting for something, something worse than has already happened! This is very riveting because it is one of the more probable scenarios for biological warfare with a truly horrifying disease. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery at its finest! Jan 15 2012

After reading "Pestilence" by Ken McClure, I definitely wanted to read "Resurrection" and I was not disappointed! It is one incredible story!

This medical mystery has a rather unassuming doctor, Adam Dewar, investigating the source of a smallpox virus that threatens to bring the killer disease back to the world's population in horrendous fashion. Contemporary in nature, "Resurrection" involves the Iraqis and a Scottish medical research facility working on a vaccination for the AIDS virus.

What is the connection between the two ... or is there a connection at all? Dewar thinks so; he does not believe in coincidence, but he has no evidence. His investigation takes the reader around some dark corners and through lots of hills and valleys.

The characters are quite believable and, unfortunately, so is the story. Pretty darn scary. I don't want to give up too much information ... that's for you to gather as you read this true page-turner.

I was bothered a bit by some punctuation problems, specifically quotation marks denoting conversation. But that will NOT detract from your reading enjoyment. Get the book and settle in for a great ride!

One thing is for sure: I will be looking for more Ken McClure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smallpox unleashed.. Sep 6 2012

I very much enjoyed Ken McClure's, 'Resurrection'! It was somewhat odd to read about Saddam Hussein.. but, as this book is a little older.. we can only give thanks that Iraq did NOT get it's hands on Smallpox. I was vaccinated against the disease in the mid Sixties. But, when the WHO eliminated smallpox in the seventies.. vaccinations for it were no longer seen as needed. This book takes on a nice twist of how researchers are still using portions of the smallpox genome to create CURES for other diseases that plague us today.

'Resurrection' is about a government official sent to find out how many research facilities have more of the smallpox genome fragments than they claim to have. To find out if someone in the research community is trying to resurrect smallpox to use against the unprotected citizens of Europe. While he is on assignment.. a drug addict is admitted to the local hospital with a severe case of smallpox.

Soon, the hospitals are filling with victims. And, there's no vaccine forthcoming. The officials must work together to find WHERE the first victim caught smallpox.. and to find out if it's tied to an Iraqi student who recently committed suicide.

The book flows nicely! From beginning to end. You just need to get your mindset SET.. before 9/11. I don't want to spoil the ending. But, it's terrifying that it could be this easy to resurrect the smallpox virus. May our children NEVER have to go through anything like what Ken McClure wrote about.. in 'Resurrection'.
