Retro Saturday Night Dinners [Kindle Edition]

Yup - these are 70's and 80's recipes alright. I remember a fair few of them fondly and still make some of these now and again. The book comes with an interactive Table of Contents that correctly interfaces with the Kindle Navigation Menu (extra star from Grandma!) and contains 25 recipes for old family favorites that can still be enjoyed today.

I do have a couple of comments on the contents. The recipe for Cabbage Rolls specifies "1 large can tomato juice." Can sizes are a bit different today than they were in the 70's. That can should hold about a quart.

The recipe for Shrimp & Crab Casserole calls for "1 can of crabmeat.' Back in the day that can would have contained 7.5 ounces or so of crabmeat. You may need two cans today. Check the size on the can of crabmeat.

The recipe for Tuna Patties calls for "2 cans (7 ounces each) tuna, drained." They haven't made 7-ounce cans of tuna in many, many a year. These days a can of tuna usually is about 4.5 ounces. You will need at least three of them for this recipe. I say "at least three" because these days many brands of tuna also contain substantially more water than they did back when. Don't be surprised if you need four cans.

These are all nice easy recipes for quick week night dinners. (Yes, they use canned soups. What can I say? It was the 70's!)

When I saw the recipe for Red Flannel Hash I was surprised. I didn't think many people still ate cornbeef hash. We love it and have it often. This recipe is a bit different from the one I usually use but it was excellent when I made it a couple of nights ago for our supper. Red Flannel Hash is one of those wonderful quick and easy meals you can make in less than half an hour.

I also have tried the Salmon Loaf. I used freshly cooked salmon instead of canned salmon and it was delicious. I grew up eating fresh salmon and have never been able to acquire a taste for the canned variety so I never use the canned. This recipes worked perfectly well with the fresh variation.

We have been making Oven Stew with tapioca in it for years. I think it must have been back in the early 1970s when my Mom made it for the first time and we still make it today. It's excellent and you can just put it in the oven and more or less forget about it for about 3 hours. That means you're freed up to do other things.

This is an excellent little cookbook overall and it certainly does evoke memories of the 50s and 60s.

This new Kindle collection of family recipes has some wonderful takes on popular dishes from Saturdays past. Lynn has concentrated on simple to prepare, hearty, tasty fare made from affordable, every day ingredients.

A few of my favourites are the Chinese Pork, (in which you can easily substitute the pork for chicken, beef or any other meat you have to hand), the Ham Loaf and the best of the lot - American Goulash. My wife thinks I'm mad for using Campbell's Condensed Soup as an ingredient for speedy meals, but then again she didn't grow up in the 70s as I did!

I feel privileged to share Lynn's family recipes, and will be sure to hand them down to my daughters to share with their future families too.
