Product Description

From Amazon.com

The 22 tracks on Retrospective deftly chronicle the best years of the Animals, who were far and away the grittiest band in the British Invasion of the mid-1960s. Eric Burdon's magnificently raw vocals and the stabbing chords of Alan Price's Vox Continental organ gave their covers of American blues and R&B classic such as Sam Cooke's "Bring it on Home" and John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" an authenticity that no other British groups could match. Their rough sound also gave songs like "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We've Got to Get of This Place" a real sense of rage and menace. By 1967 Burdon was the only remaining original member and he formed a new band that eschewed the blues and R&B of his early years in Newcastle in favor of a psychedelic, San Francisco-influenced sound. Songs like "When I Was Young" showed he had a real gift for the type of personal songwriting that was becoming popular in the late 1960s while the lyrically obscure "San Franciscan Nights" and "Sky Pilot" suggested he spent too much time hanging out with hippies. Even when they stumbled, the Animals were interesting, and when they hit the mark, they were as good as any band from the British Invasion. --Michael John Simmons

3.0 out of 5 stars While a good cd its not a SACD hydrid..., Aug 9 2010

Mr Ronald G Davis (Okotoks, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Retrospective (Restored/Rm) (Audio CD)
Unfortunately I ordered this cd prior to a prior review being posted so I was unaware of it not being a SACD hybrid which was the reason for my ordering it.

I emailed the retailer prior to its arrival who informed me that I could return it if it didn't match my expectations so good on them. The fault lies with ABKCO who is the manufacturer who supplied a redbook (normal) cd in a jewel box with associated documentation (liner notes and rear cover) indicating it would be a Super Audio CD (SACD). I have emailed ABKCO twice who have ignored my requesting they advise as to why they are misrepresenting their product so shame on them.

As to the sound and content I have not previously owned any Animals cds so I cannot advise if this remastering is significantly better than earlier renditions but I will say that sonically its pretty good and suspect that it must be better than the original recordings.

I would offer that if you are looking for a summary of the artist's signature and better songs this compilation would fit the bill but don't be fooled into paying almost $20 for a SACD version. Spend the money knowing you will receive an accurate and good sounding cd which will transport you back in time to relive the memories of the times when these songs were first released.

3 stars for content only, would have been higher if the product's format (SACD) had been accurately portrayed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted, Mar 11 2011
This review is from: Retrospective (Restored/Rm) (Audio CD)
This CD was just what I was hoping it would be - bringing together the original songs that I loved in the 60's and could never find compiled in one place. A few I couldn't consider as hits, but in total it gets the songs you want, and you can always skip through the others, or better yet, listen to them and find out why someone considered them hits!

5.0 out of 5 stars as good as new, exceptional, July 31 2010

If I had to choose ten albums to take to a desert island, this would probably be one of them. These bluesy tunes sound as good as (or even better than) they did in the 60s. I remember what I was doing when President Kennedy was shot, and I remember what I was doing when "House of the Rising Sun" came out. This CD is exceptional for both the great tunes and for the wonderful memories they invoke. Every Boomer should have The Animals "Retrospective" in his/her collection - for the good times then and now.
