When you're Elvis Costello and you've written as many great songs as he has, how do you create a unique theatrical experience? Why, you put a bunch of those songs on a giant spinning wheel, and have audience members spin the wheel to determine the next song that the band plays.
That's what Elvis first did in the late 80's, and does again here with terrific results. His band, The Imposters, plays spectacularly and right on cue, as if you could drop a quarter in the jukebox and they could launch into any song you name.
The CD and DVD have some different performances of the songs in this set, which span Elvis' career, but the DVD is especially enjoyable as you get to view the show from a front-row seat. The CD omits the "spinning" parts of the show and smoothly segues from song to song in what is one of the most enjoyable Elvis live setlists I've ever heard. Along the way we get treated to a guest appearance by The Bangles, a great cover of the Rolling Stones' "Out of Time", and some of the most ferocious guitar playing I've ever heard coming from Elvis' guitar. The CD has a very "live" feel to it, giving you the feel that you are sitting in the audience. And the band sounds like it could be a performance from 1979 - engergetic, loud, and rocking.
I'll be returning to this album and DVD frequently - 5 stars!
