Product Description

Product Description

Deluxe CD/DVD Edition. Elvis Costello returned to the stage in 2011 with his celebrated Spinning Wheel tour and now comes the definitive document of this tour: Costello once again allowed his set list to be chosen by The Spectacular Spinning Songbook, a monumental game-show type wheel spun by select fans and featuring songs from his latest critically acclaimed release National Ransom, plus new renditions of hits, rarities and very unexpected covers. Recorded over a two night stand at The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles on May 11 and 12, 2011, the CD recording was culled from both nights' performances. The DVD is from Costello's show on May 12, 2011 and includes a special guest appearance by the Bangles. The DVD contains bonus footage including an alternate intro by Napoleon Dynamite (AKA Elvis Costello), and behind-the-scenes moments captured with the Imposters as well as extra performances not included in the main set of the show.

1.0 out of 5 stars A disaster. Horrible Sound on a terribly expensive item Dec 8 2011
By Evan Katz - Published on Amazon.com

Okay, I sprung for this, even thought it's crazy expensive for what you get. Putting the issue of cost aside, the real problem here is the sound. The CD sounds terrible. Elvis' voice is way back in the mix, and the whole thing is way too bass heavy. I wonder if they spent all their time mixing for 5.1 on the DVD, then just combined channels for the CD. Because the information is there -- it's just mixed terribly. I tried listening to the 2-channel stereo on the DVD, and it sounds like the same bad mix. Please bear in mind -- this isn't a complaint from a fussy audiophile -- I've played this on several different systems at different price points, and it just stinks. It's really too bad. The band sounds like they were in fine form, and the arrangements are good. In short, a disaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacularly entertaining April 4 2012

When you're Elvis Costello and you've written as many great songs as he has, how do you create a unique theatrical experience? Why, you put a bunch of those songs on a giant spinning wheel, and have audience members spin the wheel to determine the next song that the band plays.

That's what Elvis first did in the late 80's, and does again here with terrific results. His band, The Imposters, plays spectacularly and right on cue, as if you could drop a quarter in the jukebox and they could launch into any song you name.

The CD and DVD have some different performances of the songs in this set, which span Elvis' career, but the DVD is especially enjoyable as you get to view the show from a front-row seat. The CD omits the "spinning" parts of the show and smoothly segues from song to song in what is one of the most enjoyable Elvis live setlists I've ever heard. Along the way we get treated to a guest appearance by The Bangles, a great cover of the Rolling Stones' "Out of Time", and some of the most ferocious guitar playing I've ever heard coming from Elvis' guitar. The CD has a very "live" feel to it, giving you the feel that you are sitting in the audience. And the band sounds like it could be a performance from 1979 - engergetic, loud, and rocking.

I'll be returning to this album and DVD frequently - 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great LIVE performances captured April 3 2012
By EricM - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I've been listening to Elvis Costello since 1977 when I was 10 and given his first album 'My Aim is True' as a party gift for attending a friend's Bar Mitzvah. Since that time I've seen Elvis perform over 40 times. Aside from being an amazing songwriter, he's a great performer and artist. There are not many that could make an interactive show with a song wheel move along at such a great pace night after night. I was able to see Elvis w/the Imposters on the Revolver tour at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ and also at the Paramount Theatre in Dix Hills, NY (they were the inaugural act for the grand re-opening). This live album is a great way to experience the power and passion of one of this centuries greatest recording artists. If you have only owned an Elvis Costello Greatest Hit's album you'll definitely want to get this to 'add to your collection' as hearing Elvis and the Imposters perform live is truly a moving experience. It's a great mix of old classics and new gems! Besides, how many of his contemporaries are still creating high-quality new music rather than rehashing the same songs they wrote over 30 years ago? Not many!
