Review

Praise for the Matthew Shardlake series:

"Remarkable. . . . The sights, the voices, the very smell of this turbulent age seem to rise from the page."
P.D. James

"Terrific . . . a remarkable, imaginative feat. It is a first-rate murder mystery and one of the most atmospheric historical novels I've read in years."
The Mail on Sunday

"Historical crime fiction is sometimes little more than a modern adventure in fancy dress. Not so the novels of C. J. Sansom, whose magnificent books set in the reign of Henry VIII bring to life the sounds and smells of Tudor England . . . Dark Fire is a creation of real brilliance."
The Sunday Times (UK)

Product Description

It is spring, 1543 and King Henry VIII is wooing Lady Catherine Parr, whom he wants for his sixth wife — but this time the object of his affections is resisting. Archbishop Cranmer and the embattled Protestant faction at court are watching keenly, for Lady Catherine is known to have reformist sympathies.

Matthew Shardlake, meanwhile, is working on the case of a teenage boy, a religious maniac who has been placed by the King's council in the Bedlam hospital for the insane. Should he be released as his parents want, when his terrifying actions could lead to him being burned as a heretic?

Then, when an old friend is horrifically murdered, Shardlake promises his widow — for whom he has long had complicated feelings — to bring the killer to justice. His search leads him to connections not only with the boy in Bedlam, but with Archbishop Cranmer and Catherine Parr, and with the dark prophecies of the Book of Revelation.

As London's Bishop Bonner prepares a purge of Protestants, Shardlake, together with his assistant Jack Barak and his friend Guy Malton, follow the trail of a series of horrific murders that shake them to the core. Murders which are already bringing about frenzied talk of witchcraft and a demonic possession, for what else would the Tudor mind make of a serial killer?

5.0 out of 5 stars Evocative and enticing!, Aug 16 2009

This review is from: Revelation (Paperback)
"Revelation" is set against a very lively historical backdrop: Henry VIII is wooing Catherine Parr, court intrigue is at its best, and religious mania is reaching astonishing new heights.

In the midst of all that, Shardlake, a lovable hunchback lawyer is trying to track down a mass murderer.

Impeccable historical detail, strong characterization, great humanity, and evocative writing -- one of my all-time favorites!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fourth Shardlake book, May 4 2010

(HALL OF FAME)    (TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Revelation (Paperback)
"Revelation" is CJ Sansom's fourth book in his Matthew Shardlake series, set in the waning days of Henry VIII's reign. Revelation refers to the book in the New Testament and the words have set off a serial killer in London. Sanson writes here - as in the three previous books in the series - masterly about politics, religion, medicine, and London society, from the highest courtier to the lowest street begger.

I really can't recommend his books to a reader looking for easy reading, an easy mystery. Sanson's books are long and detailed. They are, however, a boundless joy for the reader looking to learn something while being entertained.
Oh, and he also provides maps of Tudor London to help the reader with locales.

Sanson also wrote a stand alone book, "Winter in Madrid", which is also excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Apocalyptic Times, Sep 5 2008

(HALL OF FAME)    (TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Revelation (Hardcover)
Here's one of those historical-fiction, murder-mystery thrillers that is worth a read for no other reason than the writer tells a great story that uses both characters and setting to their best advantage. The plotline involves the hero, Matthew Shardlake, a prominent Protestant reform lawyer, operating in the heart of London during the latter years of Henry VIII's reign, These are troubling times because one wrong step and the authorities could condemn you to death for sedition or heresy. While the Henrician church leaders, lead by Bishops Bonner and Gardiner, are on the warpath, Shardlake and his friends are suddenly caught up in pursuing a crazy serial killer who is attacking their own for not being true to the teachings of the Reformation. Sanson does a credible job taking his readers along on this circuitous hunt through the narrow, dingy, and smelly streets of London in hot pursuit of a sadistic murderer who kills with method and madness. The only clues they is a set of verses from Revelation describing in graphic detail God's seven endtime punishments for the earth. In this case, however, they describe quite accurately the modus operandi for slaughtering Shardlake's friends and associates. By a process of elimination and attrition - which is the way most police sleuthing works - we finally get to learn the murderer's true identity, which, ironically, isn't as important as the person he intends to kill as a fulfilment of the seventh plague. As far as historical fiction, "Revelation" is competently written and well-researched.
