Book Description

Feb 8 2011
The first monograph on the work of Richard Gillette, a visionary designer whose elegant interiors are inspired by the works of the great artists of history. Richard Gillette is one of America’s leading interior designers, lauded for his comprehensively conceived and exquisitely detailed rooms. A painter by training, his work draws inspiration from the great masters, ranging from artists of the ancient world and the luminaries of the Enlightenment to such familiar figures as Rembrandt, Millais, Klimt, Miro, de Chirico, and Braque, among others. Richard Gillette: The Art of the Interior presents twenty of the best examples of his interiors. Although his style palette ranges widely, from Cubist Illusion to Victorian Minimal, Pre-Raphaelite Deco to Rococo, all of the apartments and homes featured share a common element: each design was inspired by a central and unifying piece of art that informs the space—a cubist painting by Picasso or Braque, a neo-realist piece by de Chirico, a Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece by Millais. Stunning color photographs highlight the hallmarks of Gillette’s work—his exceptionally fine craftsmanship and painterly attention to surface and form, elements that contribute to making his interiors works of art in their own right. A volume rich in sumptuous detail, Richard Gillette: The Art of the Interior is a sublime integration of aesthetics and form in the realized contemporary interior.

Review

"Richard Gillette has a genuinely artistic sensibility that makes for painterly, even somewhat mysterious, interiors, a selection of which are now beautifully showcased in his new book The Art of the Interior (Rizzoli)." ~New York Social Diary

“Richard Gillette’s interior design makes leaving the house that much harder… ‘Interiors’ collects a series of clear vivid photographs that document work he did between 1975 and 2008, mostly in New York City. The range is genuinely astonishing: How did the same man design both a townhouse based on the minimal, strong lines of Japanese homes and a cool, glorious apartment filled with an array of Greco-Roman elements? If Gillette has designed your home, collecting art seems almost redundant.” ~The Daily

“Stunning photographs highlight the hallmarks of Gillette’s work—his exceptionally fine craftsmanship and painterly attention to surface and form, elements that contribute to making his interiors works of art in their own right.” ~Dexigner

“Richard Gillette has worked mightily as a one-man atelier for the past 30 years.” ~Architects + Artisans

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly an Inspiration Jun 29 2011
By Beth H. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Richard Gillette is truly an inspiration for anyone with a passion for art history or an eye for design. Through his book, Gillette demonstrates that it is possible to incorporate the rich history of visual culture through a wide array of artistic landscapes into one's own home, creating a personalized museum that feels as fresh and fabulous as it does cozy and casual. Gillette has an intuitive knack for combining classic architecture with modern art, and in turn adorning very modern spaces with beautiful antiques.

Bravo! Richard- you have truly taken the ranks amongst the greats as one of the best interior designers of the twentieth, and now twenty-first, century.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gallery for Living Aug 14 2011
By Yoshiko Kasuga - SPAde Magazine - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is an art you can't hang on the walls, but it can be. At best, it is the walls themselves that become character and device and, if done to perfection, extend beyond their physical limits to mingle with your life. The cliche of the home decorator is having someone to spend your money for you. The reality of an interior designer is finding that rare individual who can see something for you that you would never have thought of, and later wonder how you missed it all along.
