In fact, don't leave home until you have read it! Even if you have visited Europe before, you will find Rick Steves' "Europe Through the Back Door" an indispensable guide to planning your trip.
His many years of experience travelling Europe are evident in his ability to save you money while ensuring that you get to see the things that are really important to the first time or frequent visitor.
He addresses the many concerns of would-be visitors by devoting sections of his book to Planning itineries; Transportation; Money; Safety and a wide variety of information gleaned from his experiences in Europe.
I found his Back Door suggestions on "off-the-beaten-track" places to visit most useful. Of course, by now, the popularity of this book has probably ensured the are no longer "off-the-beaten-track!"
My wife and I are planning another trip to Europe this spring and, despite doing it the easy way on an organized tour, we still found lots of good advice in this book.
