Pitch Black was premium-grade science-fiction/horror. It gathered up all the creative detritus left behind by the Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Star Trek, and E.C. Comics like Weird Science, retro-fitted them for use in a CGI-equipped modern-day monster movie, and hit the ignition. It didn't explode. Or it did, but in a good way.

A space-ship full of cosmic pilgrims crash-lands on a thoroughly alien world. They find themselves in a scorched wasteland, a desert graveyard holding the bones of hill-sized behemoths. It seems bad, and the presence of a convict named Riddick makes things seem even worse. When they learn that subterranean tunnels house myriads upon myriads of nocturnal exo-monstrosities, like terrifying hybrids of the Hammerhead shark, Komodo dragon, Bengal tiger, and the alien from `Alien', they're relieved that these terrifying things can't handle sunlight... starlight... whatever. When they learn that the hourglass is about to be flipped, and the planet's eccentric orbit and axial rotation will result in something too `lastingly dark' to call `night', well... it's a bit scary. Riddick ends up being the pitch-black anti-hero his badge-wearing escort isn't, and Radha Mitchell finds classic 1961-style redemption for her selfish past.

Director David Twohy earned his stellar reputation among SF and horror fans with `Pitch Black', and deservedly so. Then he destroyed his stellar reputation among SF and horror fans with `Chronicles of Riddick', and deservedly so. So this now-incomplete collection has kind of a 'Rise and Fall of the Third Reich' thing going on. You get 'Pitch Black' a brilliantly suspenseful SF-classic, and you get 'Chronicles of Riddick', which is a convoluted mess, but perhaps provides sport for those who enjoy pulling apart big, dumb films. Wait, and get the inevitable trilogy set, since 'Riddick' takes us back into exciting science fiction monster-horror territory, and redeems the franchise.

WOW! Those who think that Vin sucks as an actor, are tragically wrong.
These movies are not Shakespear and therefore should not at any time be considered in that light. But, if action is your style, and a good measure of a nasty guy with a big heart, Vin wins hands down. All his movies I love and so should you!
More, more, more, Vin, please!

"Now here's what i know of this collection of Riddick",i will not review the

Pitch Black is in 2.40:1 widescreen runtime 1 hr.49 min.Dolby Digital 2.0
i have no idea why it's not in 5.1 i could not hear the actors talking i had to

runtime 2 hr. 14 min.1080p High Definition HD-Master Audio,
the special features are all in 480i standard Def.i've never ever been so bloody
disappointed in a purchased like this one,and i have the d.v.d.collection so i though
i was going get the best in this Blu-Ray.not so,here i know blu-ray supposed to be
the Best there is with perfect picture and purest digital sound available anywhere, these
people are a bunch of lazy pric** who don't want to spend the money and time to make
it right, but they expect us to pay for poor Quality, because you know why there is not
a dam thing we can do about it,because someone out there will buy it.no Question at all,
You can count on that one,you know we all have our Day of redemption even if we don't see it.

I have always liked sci-fi, and these are no exception. Completely different from our real world, it drives your imagination towards what could become of us in a few centuries. Refreshing. It is sad that the hero is such a violent murderer, and that people always need his help in order to survive hostile worlds. Each time, he agrees to help them because he would not be able to survive on his own. The story and the planet they're on in Pitch Black are disappointing. It's more or less like a boring horror movie at times. On the other hand, Chronicles of Riddick is a true sci-fi movie worth watching. To me, Diesel is not a very good actor. But the story and the context of that harsh planet, the Advanced civilization that they encounter and their thechnology are most interesting. That is certainly a possibility that could happen if one day the humans succeed in traveling to other systems. Some planets or moons could well be quite unhospitable... I give it a 4 stars because of that second movie only. Worth watching again in the future.

This was a great movie if you like this genre. The affects were well done although the dog like animals could have used a bit better special affects. Over all I would watch this movie again as I am a Vin Diesel fan and the story was pretty good.
