Product Description

From Amazon.com

Seaworthy brothers Joshua and Mischo McKay specialize in a genre-blended pastiche of unusual instrumental touches, drone music, and bits of pan-Asian melodic structures, a formula that distinguished their former band, Macha. Unfortunately, despite excellent releases like 1999's See It Another Way, Macha went sadly under-appreciated outside their adopted hometown of Athens, Georgia. However, with Seaworthy's quieter, muted electronic feel, the duo has managed to keep the best things about Macha while adding a less abrasive, easier-to-swallow aesthetic. Songs like "I Met Her in the Candy Store" and "The Day" slack lazily from verse to sparse verse, seemingly hook-free; it's only the next day, as you're humming chunks of the song in a grocery store that the music's lingering effect becomes obvious. Like a sleepy cross between Boards of Canada and Loop Guru, the pace of the music feels just right, with tracks blending one into the next, falling in and out of hushed lullabies like "Lone Star Samba" and the mystically inspired "The Ride, Pt. 1." With growing popular interest in experimental techno and world music, perhaps the skewed approach that made their past work so compelling will find more takers in this latest incarnation. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Seaworthy is a different kind of surprise. Free of any Eastern influence, the debut recordings of Josh McKay's (Macha) new project glow softly with a heroin-laced calm, anesthetizing the listener to the dark melancholy which lies just beneath the surface. As with the Macha recordings Mckay's production is vital. Guest appearances include a gorgeous collaboration (track 6) with Japanese singer Haco, a member of Osaka's legendary experimentalists After Dinner, and female trio Hoahio (John Zorn's Tzadik Records). The stunning ten-minute, two-part title track that closes the album is the kind of song that comes along only once in a great while. Jetset Records.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seaworthy's "The Ride" holds water, Aug 19 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Ride (Audio CD)
I picked this up on a lark at my local record store a few months ago. I was somewhat familiar with Macha, but had only actually heard 1 song from their collaborative album with Bedhead ("Hey, Goodbye," a great song).

All I can say is, it pays to take risks. This is a phenomenal record - drony, ambient, beautifully composed, unique and diverse instrumentation. Listen to it after a long day at the office, with your mind-altering substance of choice. You will drift along the calm, blue waters of Seaworthy's sonic sea.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPLENDOR AND RAPTURE IN AMBIENT COLLISION...., April 13 2002

....this album is in the same brave pioneering sonic spirit as BRIAN ENO'S "Another Green World" or RADIOHEAD'S "Amnesiac" or SIGOR ROS' "Agaetis Byrjun"....a thoroughly addictive journey by way of distinctive songs with laid-back m/f vocals (two with the splendidly sexy voice of Haco,) indie/electro/third world instrumentation and strange but wonderfully syncopated beats. ONE OF THE BEST RELEASES SO FAR IN 2002. At last, an artist that REALLY knows how to blend world instruments into some challenging indie grooves and textures. SEAWORTHY will seduce you and, I promise, you will be thankful for it! (Make no mistake....this album is lightyears beyond anything produced by the prior band, MACHA.) SEAWORTHY "Ride" is visionary stuff! I recommended it to all adventurous souls who sincerely want to hear tomorrow's music today. Yep, it really IS that good!

I bought this disc on a whim, from a review in the Tower magazine Pulse from 2 years ago. I am a happy camper. I don't know how to describe the music though. There are shades of the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis in the first two tracks. Not pop. Has some progressive elements, some interesting melodies. I kind of view it like an ocean of music washing over you.
