Book Description

June 1 2007 Complete Cossack Adventures (Book 3)
A master of driving pace, exotic setting, and complex plotting, Harold Lamb was one of Robert E. Howard's favorite writers. Here at last is every pulse-pounding, action-packed story of Lamb's greatest hero, Khlit the Cossack, the “wolf of the steppes.” Journey with the unsung grandfather of sword and sorcery in search of ancient tombs, gleaming treasure, and thrilling landscapes.  Match wits with deadly swordsmen, scheming priests, and evil cults. Rescue lovely damsels, ride with bold comrades, and hazard everything on your brains, skill, and a little luck.

This four-volume set collects for the first time the complete Cossack stories of Harold Lamb: every adventure of Khlit the Cossack and those of his friends, allies, and fellow Cossacks, many of which have never appeared between book covers. Compiled and edited by the Harold Lamb scholar Howard Andrew Jones, each volume features essays Lamb wrote about his stories, an informative introduction by a popular author, and a wealth of rare, exciting, swashbuckling fiction.

In this third volume, the wily old Cossack Khlit may have aged but he's lost none of his guile. He shepherds his dashing grandson Kirdy into one adventure after another, finally uniting with his allies Ayub and Demid in the climactic story White Falcon—out of print since the 1920s. Here too are the exploits of Ayub and Demid, risking all to safeguard the perilous Russian border from marauding Turks, Tatars, and even bloodthirsty Russian nobles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Series? Aug. 29 2014
By Van The Man - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Probably the best set of stories of the series, though I really liked book two as well. In these stories, Lamb seems to have "reached his stride" as an author. These stories, which were longer and contained lots of interesting details, seemed to flow more easily, had richer details, and provided a bit more depth of character not only for the main players but even for a few of the lesser ones as well. I continue to be amazed at the quality of this work. It was written in the 20s and, despite some of the racial characterizations that may jar some PC readers, the overall experience is one of sensing that you have lived a bit of 18th century, Cossack reality (and, of course, had a great adventure in the bargain). I can see why these stories have influenced so many of our modern fantasy writers.

As historically based literature it is timeless, as are all of Harold Lamb's literary works.
Having read so many of Harold Lamb's historical novels over 50 years ago, It's like meeting old friends.

Just cries out to be ripped off. Excellent fully plotted stories by a now-forgotten author. Would make a great basis for movies, fictional barbarian novels, what-have-you.

Every volume in the collected tales of Harold Lamb is a WOW book. Riders of the Steppes is another example. I recommend all eight books in the University Of Nebraska Bison reprint series of Harold Lamb.
