Book Description

Mar 27 2007 Reigning Cats & Dogs Mysteries
Surf’s up . . . and so are the stakes when veterinarian and amateur sleuth Jessica Popper escapes to the land of hula, hibiscus, and geckos for a professional conference. The last time she and boyfriend Nick Burby touched down on the island of Hawaii, Nick caused a volcanic eruption when he unexpectedly popped The Question to commitment-phobic Jess. But this trip proves just as dangerous when Jess befriends an ambitious young reporter whose body later washes up on the sand . . . and someone thinks Jess holds the clue to the killer’s motive.

There’s no end of suspects among the exotic flora and fauna, from the victim’s journalistic rivals and a mystery boyfriend to an eccentric beachcomber and a governor’s aide with ties to a controversial biotech firm bringing progress to paradise. One of them is a killer with the chameleon-like ability to stay hidden—and if Jessica doesn’t uncover hula-dunnit in time, she’ll be saying aloha . . . permanently.

Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The last time readers saw full-time vet/part-time sleuth Jessica Popper and her lawyer-to-be boyfriend Nick Burby, she was rejecting his marriage proposal on a Maui beach. Baxter picks up her popular mystery series 18 months later, after the stubborn pair have resettled into comfortable couplehood, but puts them, improbably, on a flight right back to Maui—this time for a veterinarians' conference, 10 days of R&R and, hopefully, a little romance. Their vacation gets sidetracked when the body of young reporter Marnie Burton washes up on the beach, and Jessie—having just met Marnie the day before—decides to take a closer look. As she brings to light the shady dealings of a biotech firm and a plethora of quirky suspects, readers will forgive the unlikely return trip, if only for Baxter's rich sense of setting. Fans might be less forgiving of Baxter's decision to do away with the usual menagerie of critters (with the exception of an orphaned cat), but her shift in focus pays off with a robust cast and a trickier whodunit. 3.0 out of 5 stars I judged this book by its cover. Oops. Mar 5 2008
By Leslie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I bought this book in a fit of consumption at a Books-a-Million because the quirky orange cover and title caught my eye. I expected a sort of Janet Evanovich type of romp, full of whimsy, humor, romance, danger -- just a bit of enjoyable mind candy.

Instead, although I found the writing perfectly fine and the descriptions of Hawaii tantalizing, the story itself fell flat. Very disappointing. I can suspend many levels of belief, so I didn't have a problem with the plot per se. It just didn't sparkle for me the way I'd hoped.

4.0 out of 5 stars strong amateur sleuth April 5 2007
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Eighteen months have passed since Brookside University School of Law student Nick Burby proposed to commitment phobic veterinarian Jessica Popper and she said no though they still seeing one another exclusively. However, they are now returning to the scene of the crime, make that proposal, as they leave Long Island for Maui for her to attend the American Veterinary Medical Association's annual conference and for them to share some romantic interludes.

However their retreat is disturbed when the corpse of reporter Marnie Burton washes on the beach near Jessie. Having met the journalist the day before and as always curious when it comes to bodies, Jessica looks close at the deceased while someone observes her doing so and worries that the Long Islander might have found a clue especially when the vet begins making inquiries that lead her to a biotech firm.

Though the latest Jessica Popper whodunit is not reigning cats and dogs, fans of a strong amateur sleuth tale will enjoy the heroine's return to Hawaii in which her biggest fear is that Nick will ask the "Question" even when someone wants to end her inquiry. The cast is solid even with just one supporting feline as so many two legged beasts make prime suspects. Though some purists might object to the lack of the four-legged secondary characters, Cynthia Baxter provides a strong mystery RIGHT FROM THE GECKO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Fun Read July 12 2008
By Dr. Joan E. Aitken - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
While at a veterinary convention, Jessica Popper meets a newswoman who is murdered. Jessica has to figure out the story the reporter was working on and figure out exactly why local farmers are being forced to sell their land. Jessica tries to attend the convention, reconstruct the news story, solve the murder, and have a romantic get-away in Hawaii.

I've read three books in Cynthia Baxter's series and enjoyed them all. I like the little details of her writing and her direct style. She knows how to observe and describe a scene. And a big plus is Baxter's humorous approach to her mysteries.

In this book there are multiple scary situations, with some twists, which makes the story a page-turner. I have my suspects, but I wasn't quite sure where it would end.

This book is a littler lighter on her veterinary work--although I always learn something about pet care--and heavier on romance. Baxter's upbeat and lively writing style is fun entertainment. The combination of mystery, intrigue, humor, and animals are a winner.
