Ripley Publishing- September 2011
This is a wonderful book on virtually every kind of unusual
person or event. For instance, Tim Cockerill (known as the
Great Inferno) gargles hot molten lava. A 6500 year old
baby mummy is depicted in a life-like pose. The artist,
Daniel Ortega of San Diego, Ca. turns ashes of the dead
into beautiful art pieces. A stunning scene of the Kilauea
volcano in Hawaii has been spewing volcanic ash and lava for
almost 3 decades.
A grotesque "Festival of the Skulls" is depicted
in La Paz, Bolivia. A live picture of lightening
was captured by a photographer as the flash hit
the Statue of Liberty on 9/22/10. The smallest house
in Great Britain is a two floor 6 by 10 foot structure
depicted in this book.
A weeping glacier appeared to be carved out of a
rock formation in Svalbard, Norway. There are other
wonders of nature sprinkled throughout the extensive presentation.
The contents of the book are organized as follows:
o The World of Animals
o Body Art
o Food Arts
o Science and Beyond Belief
The front cover is a stunning apple red with an
open eye looking straight at you. Strikingly True
is a considerable curiosity for the young
and old alike.
The flashy cover on this book grabs your eye and just MAKES you want to open it and see what is inside! The Table of Contents divides the book into numerous categories like food, animals, body, etc and includes lots of fantastic pictures to capture your attention.
I cannot even begin to describe how much information is incuded in this book! Every page is chock full of facts, figures, and full color photos highlighting some of the most bizzare things I have ever seen. At 256 pages long, it would take you weeks to read everything in it!
Basically, a great encyclopedia of weird phenomena that will catch the attention of old and young alike!

The 40's and 50's were the days when Cartoons and Comics reigned supreme, and were followed by everyone, young and old alike.Ripley's Believe It or Not was a Cartoon, and carried widely in local newspapers. My other favorite was Dick Tracy. Both of these have survived all these years. My local newspaper hasn't carried the Ripley cartoon nor the Dick Tracy comic strip for years;but fortunately I still get them both daily from the net.Come to think of it,while Ripley's and Tracy have survived, many of the newspapers have not,and ended up on the trashpile of history.I suspect both of these trends will continue.
It's hard to compare this latest book with all the previous ones. They have all been great.I suppose the thing that has changed most is the great improvement in construction, paper, printing ,color and all other aspects of what Ripley's has taken advantage of,and incorporated in each new book. These books are "built to last" and can be kept for many to enjoy for years. Not only have I enjoyed them but also have my children, and now my grandchildren.
I was in Key West Florida in August this year.It was stifling hot for a "northerner" like me.So guess where I spent the afternoon? You guessed it---Ripley's Museum. There I saw many of the things I had been reading about for years.I was surprised during my first visit to a Ripley Museum in Niagara Falls,Canada, that there was not a single Ripley book for sale.I would think they would have many of the past books available, because the older ones are just as exciting as the new ones.In Key West,I didn't expect to find any Ripley books for sale;but to my surprise they had this new one,and Believe It or Not!,that was on the 15th of August and the publication date shown here is September 13th..
I have written Reviews on quite a few Ripley books,so wont' bother to mention any of the new and exciting things that Ripley's has found for us;but will just say;don't miss this one ,it is excellent as usual. Also, don't be shy, sign up for the daily cartoon on the net. It's free,Believe It or Not!,what a bargain.
