An Okay Book,

I have to admit I was disappointed with this book, the third book written by Mo Hayder with the character Detective Caffery. Her first two books Birdman and The Treatment were incredible but I didn't find this book to be any where near as good--those books I couldn't put down and I loaned to my friends with very high recommendations. That being said, this book did have an interesting and horrific crime, with a plot that built and built throughout the book but there was something missing that I can't quite put my finger on, but I just couldn't get into the story. I found the book easy to put down and I wasn't in any hurry to pick it up again. I am not sorry for the purchase because the author reveals a little more into the life of the lead character, detective Caffery and answers a few questions left open from the last book.Her other books Pig Island and Devil of Nanking are amazing.

I bought the book a while ago, and for some reason I put it down easily a while ago while only about 50 pages into it. After having read The Treatment, I picked it up again, but am sorry to say that I struggled through it. I'm putting it down very easily. Trying to skim through it. Part of it is that I find little in common with the main characters; the line going on about Caffery is first very much to the side and doesn't really get any where as crucial as the previous two novels. So I don't recommend this one at all. Maybe there are some redeeming qualities - I can't fault the language and overall plot - but it's just not where I expect Mo to be.

Mo Hayder's most recent novel, Ritual, is a pretty good read and one that I would certainly recommend. If you have read any of her novels in the past, then you will certainly be familiar with the elements she presents here. Creepy settings, well written characters, a plot that turns on itself again and again, and of course Hayder's trademark dry wit.The novel starts with the discovery for a severed hand found in the local harbour. After the police are called in, the investigation begins and takes the investigators on a journey in to the dark world of human mutilations, the sex trade, and ancient superstitions. For fear of revealing too much about the story, I will keep this review on the short side. However if you like detective novels which border on the suspense - even horror - side, then do yourself a favour and give this book a read.
