Product Description

The River Murders seeks to find horror gold in the fusion of religious obsession and gruesome violence. Detective Jack Verdon (Ray Liotta) finds his life torn apart when a serial killer starts to murder women from his past in the same horrific way. The mystery of who the killer is and how he knows so much about Verdon's sexual history is a strong plot hook (preposterous yet engaging, like many good thrillers), but the dialogue ranges from workmanlike to clumsy to insulting. Liotta coasts blithely through the movie, apparently just picking up a paycheck; the other name actors, Ving Rhames and Christian Slater, don't try much harder. The lesser-known cast members, like Sarah Ann Schultz and Michael Rodrick, put in more effort with good results. The River Murders seems like it wanted to dive into the disturbing waters of Seven or at least the under-the-skin creeps of torture porn like Hostel, but it never manages to step beyond ogling the naked bodies of murdered women. --Bret Fetzer
