From Library Journal
Hamilton Basso was a relatively well-known Southern writer from the Thirties through the mid-Fifties whose most familiar novel was The View from Pompey's Head, published in 1954. With this literary biography, freelancer Lake hopes to bring greater notice to some of Basso's earlier, overlooked novels. Lake makes the case that some of Basso's early works were important to the development of the Southern literary novel and deserve a second look. Basso was a contemporary and friend of Thomas Wolfe, William Faulkner, and F. Scott Fitzgerald and was edited by Maxwell Perkins. He wrote for both the New Republic and The New Yorker, where he was also an editor. Students of Southern literature will find this book of interest, as will those concerned with Basso's better-known friends. Recommended for academic collections and public libraries with a strong interest in Southern literature.ADenise Johnson, Bradley Univ. Lib., Peoria, IL
