Product Description

This book is a mixture of anecdotes covering Roald Dahl's family, his childhood, and his happiness at home with Liccy, his wife, and their numerous children, grandchildren and friends. For this extensive family, there is no more enjoyable way of relaxing than sharing good food and wine. The meals they enjoy together round the old pine farmhouse table at Gipsey House are either fine examples of national dishes of their heritage - Norwegian, French, British, etc - or favourite recipes that have delighted three generations of discerning eaters. Many recipes have acquired a particular significance for the Dahl family over the years, and these are introduced with reminiscenses rich in nostalgia and humour. The recipes are for all occasions, covering family birthday parties, Christmas and Easter celebrations, Roald's passion for chocolate, onions and wine, his enthusiasm for gambling and gardening and finally, a Dahl-style chapter: "Hangman's Suppers" - contributed by Francis Bacon, P.D. James, John Le Carre, Peter Ustinov and others.

About the Author

Roald Dahl, the best-loved of children's writers, was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. His books continue to be bestsellers, despite his death in 1990, and total UK sales are 55 million worldwide! Quentin Blake is one of the best-known and best-loved children's illustrators and it's impossible now to think of Roald Dahl's writings without imagining Quentin Blake's illustrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very pleasant reading, Nov 12 2008
By Diana A. Williams - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Roald Dahls Cookbook (Paperback)
If you like Road Dahl's writing, his wit - you must read this book, but try to forget his other books for a moment and enjoy these real-life stories and anecdotes written in the last stage of his life, all mixed up with recipes and photographs and comments. This is the last thing he wrote, and it must be appreciated and savoured! Dont expect just a plain cookbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Eclectic Cookbook, May 10 2010
By Bored of Folk - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Roald Dahls Cookbook (Paperback)
This is not your regular cookbook. It is part memoir, part love letter to family members and part recipe book. His words and wisdom are warm and touching and, whilst many of the recipes seem to hark from another, slower era, it is a fascinating read, along the same lines as Jane Grigson or Elizabeth David. Deeply British.
