Product Description

A photographic innovator and conceptual artist, Robert Heinecken played an important role in the development of contemporary art practice. That role is critically assessed in this exhibition catalog, which accompanies a major traveling retrospective organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. This volume, the first comprehensive book on Heinecken since 1980, illustrates all the major work in his thirty-year career, and features essays by leading photography critic and historian A.D. Coleman and exhibition curator Lynne Warren.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Visual Feast for Contemporary Art/Photography Lovers, Mar 26 2000

This review is from: Robert Heinecken: Photographist (Paperback)
Having just seen the exhibit of Robert Heinecken at LACMA I can say this book is a very complete collection of his work. The pictures are beautiful and clearly show the brilliance of his craft. It is my first experience with his work and I am in love with it! The collection is a collage of photography and media related pictures mixed and overlapped expertly in erotic and humourous fashions. Heinecken uses eroticism blatanly and beautifully and his nudes are drawn on and overlapped with various images and often surrounded with written commentary by the artist. If you can't see the exhibit this is a beautiful book to experience a revolutionary artist!

5.0 out of 5 stars A revolutionary artist gets his retrospective, Aug 30 2006

This review is from: Robert Heinecken: Photographist (Paperback)
Robert Heinecken was a visionary artist, a teacher, an ex Jarhead, and a pack a day smoker (Marlboro Lights). I have read most of the books published about him, seen many shows featuring his work and saw him lecture a number of times. This is a great book about his work that shows his work over 3 decades. The essays about him are insightful and interesting and reveal the complexity of his work and thought. Heinecken re-envisioned many aspects of photography from photograms to found imagery. His work also touched on notions of persona, celebrity and sexuality. Get this book! You will not be disappointed.
