Product Description

From Amazon.com

A minor classic from Disney, this 1973 all-animal, all-animated musical version of the familiar story is more charming than one might expect. Perhaps it's the warm, chummy take on key relationships within the legend--the way Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian (Monica Evans) comes up or the way best pal Little John (Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book) admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero, "Aw, Rob, why dontcha just marry the girl?" (Then, of course, there's the canny "casting" of the romantic leads as foxes: Robin the sly one and Marian the, well, foxy one.) The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic: Peter Ustinov, Andy Devine, Terry-Thomas, George Lindsey. Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale. The film is ably directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, whose decades of work in Disney's animation division helped create the studio's rich legacy. --Tom Keogh

Review

From the swashbuckling idols of Douglass Fairbanks and Errol Flynn to the gritty antiheroes of Sean Connery and Kevin Costner, Robin Hood has undergone several transformations throughout the history of live-action film. Yet, none of them are as enjoyable, or as handsome, as Disney's crimson fox in this much-loved cartoon feature. Director Wolfgang Reitherman and Disney animators create a fantastical animal world where each species' traits appear to coincide seamlessly with the well-known characteristics of Nottingham's inhabitants. The voice work is performed with bravado, especially Peter Ustinov, Terry Thomas, and Pat Buttram's contributions as the film's villains, Prince John, Sir Hiss, and the Sheriff of Nottingham. The musical numbers are an eclectic mix of folk, country, and children's rhyme that is not without a period flair: According to Disney historians, songwriter George Bruns went to great lengths to incorporate medieval instruments like the harpsichord and mandolin into the tunes. Furthermore, the film's quick and lively pace, combined with a short screening time, make Robin Hood a fun and painless watch, even for those with an aversion to cartoons. ~ Aubry Anne D'Arminio, All Movie Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite Disney animated films!, Feb 21 2003
This review is from: Robin Hood (Full Screen) (DVD)
There haven't been very many well-known Disney movies that I know of that were highly successful nor as groundbreaking during the 1960s through the first half of the 1980s and some of the Disney movies that were made during that time should've been more successful. The Disney animated edition of Robin Hood is one of those and is in fact, probably my favorite Disney movie of all-time.

Released in 1973, it is a wonderful adaptation of the medieval novel with the characters being animal humanoids with Robin Hood being A Fox, Little John a Bear, Friar Tuck being a badger, and the greedy and semi-evil Prince John being a Lion. It's all so entertaining and so much fun to watch and laugh to with all of the charm and charisma that I think a lot of Disney movies during the 1970s and 1980s lacked. Don't get me wrong, most of Disney's movies are great but Robin Hood in my opinion is one of the most overlooked classics of all-time and also is my favorite Disney movie of all time, alongside the also overlooked "The Great Mouse Detective".

As you might already know, it's a tale of an outlaw who robs the rich Prince John and his goon wolf The Sheriff, to feed the poor and the hungry in Nottingham and dreams of marrying a lovely lady named Maid Marian and it's all so wonderful. If those who are turned off by the excessive drama or the unsettling atmosphere of the Kevin Costner classic "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", this Disney edition will definitely make a wonderful substitute. I recommend both versions of Robin Hood. I like the Disney one more.

The background music is also highly memorable with some incredible catchy songs and battle scenes that are just enough to keep you laughing for a very long time and just the whole atmosphere of the movie makes Robin Hood one of the most underrated and overlooked classics of all time. A lot of more popular Disney movies while great, they don't seem to impress me as much as Robin Hood has, and some are just downright pap! Robin Hood doesn't fall into that category. It has the fun and joy for young kids to enjoy and the style and timeless music and storytelling to entertain the adults. I would even go far as to say that Robin Hood is better than Aladdin, and Prince of Egypt. Don't get me wrong, those are classics too but not at the heights of Robin Hood though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a great Disney film, but still fun for kids, July 5 2000
By Don Barrie (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Robin Hood (Full Screen) (DVD)
Disney's animated version of ROBIN HOOD was released during the studio's biggest dry spell. Watching this film, you can sense that the studio was trying to re-establish itself following the death of its founder. Scenes from previous films were recycled (note the dance scene in one musical sequence borrows heavily from SNOW WHITE), an odd list of actors were cast to voice the characters (e.g. Southerners playing Englishmen! ), and only one or two songs are memorable. But it's not as bad as it sounds. The animated ROBIN HOOD does have some redeeming things about it.

The reason why adults may not find this film exciting is because it's strictly aimed at kids. But its emphasis on maintaining healthly relationships with loved ones during hard times is something to admire. To say that ROBIN HOOD lacks heart is being a tad harsh. Yes, it lacks a strong story, but it's unfair to dismiss it all together just for that. The film's simplicity and unpretentious nature has helped ROBIN HOOD in receiving wider attention and appreciation over the years. It may not be a "classic" Disney film, but it's certainly an admirable one.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Story of Robin Hood is much better!, May 4 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Robin Hood (Full Screen) (DVD)
I liked this as a child, but it's really one of Disney's weaker animated films and lacks a lot of the attention to detail that sets apart the studio's real Classics. Some of the scenes look like actual tracings from other movies (the scene where Maid Marian is dancing with the animals - it's Snow White and the Dwarfs down to every move!). I recently rented Disney's live action "The Story of Robin Hood" and was so impressed I went out and bought the video - great film full of excitement and suspence. It also explained the whole legend of Robin Hood better and gave the characters a bit more depth. This animated version is only so-so.
