Product Description

Amazon.ca

More than merely a headbanger's take on A Star Is Born, Rock Star is, like all great Hollywood middlebrow fare, actually "inspired by a true story": the saga of an Ohio salesman/Judas Priest tribute band vocalist who one day found himself taking Rob Halford's place in the spotlight. But whether its music is big-hair throwback or merely ahead-of-the-curve '80s retro-hip is hardly a matter that will cause quantum theorists sleepless nights. Not surprisingly, the film's soundtrack sounds both distinctly virtual and marketing-department honed: a mix of modern rockers (Everclear's hard-pop title track, the Verve Pipe's "Colorful") and '80s vets (Bon Jovi's genre-defining "Livin' on a Prayer"). Steel Dragon, the film's fictional headliners, feature era vets Jason Bonham on drums, Zakk Wylde on guitar, and vocalist Jeff Scott Soto giving star Mark Wahlberg something to lip-synch. They re-create a frighteningly credible faux-'80s pop-metal ethos that ranges from the big-ballad Bon Jovi-isms of "We All Die Young" to the pounding, metallic Priest-cloning of "Livin' the Life" and "Blood Pollution," and the anthemic "Long Live Rock and Roll," the latter in a ham-fisted performance that begs to be subtitled "(But Please Retire Soon)." It's all enough to make long-suffering heavy metal fans cry out, "Why hast thou forsaken us, Spinal Tap?" --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME MOVIE AND SOUNDTRACK Feb 18 2002
By Daria
Format:Audio CD
I didn't get to see Rock Star in the movies so I was waiting anxiously for it to come on DVD. Last weekend I finally got to watch it and not only did i LOVE the movie, the MUSIC was THE BEST! I grew up listening to all of the 80's heavy metal / hair bands and I have to say this soundtrack is just pumping! I'm listening to it right now! :) The high pitched vocals and the guitar playing / metal sound was bringing me back into the 80s all over again! I'm glad to say that they brought some of this music back in 2000 when they came out with this movie. Every song is superb....from Bon Jovi, Kiss, etc...but I'm really enjoying the Steel Dragon Songs the best, especially "Stand Up and Shout" and "We All Die Young." The movie also rocked!! Mark Walhberg was an awesome actor and I LOVED Dominic West's performance as Kirk Cuddy!! He is an outstanding actor...(can't stop watching him and love his accent!) For you 80's heavy metal fans.....get the CD....it's worth every penny!!

I think this may be the finest movie. I don't even like Mark or Jennifer and I love the music from this CD and the movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Album Were It Not For Everclear Mar 22 2004
Format:Audio CD
An album laced featuring vocal talents of Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force) and Mike Matijevic (Steelheart), with the axe wielding abilities of Zakk Wylde (Ozzie Osbourne, Black Label Society), Drums hammered on by John Bonham (Jason Bonham's son), and Bass being contributed by Dokken's Jeff Pilson (who shows some major chops on one of the tracks that didn't even make the disc - "Reckless"), could not be saved from the disgusting major labels' influence.

While 90% of this CD rocks with a straight metal edge, Priority somehow felt the need to throw "Everclear" on the disc ruining a perfect 10 out of 10. While Verve Pipe is certainly acceptable being a very mellow song writing band, Everclear is not. Everclear wouldn't know a real Metal song if someone came up and clocked them in the skull with one. They shouldn't have been on the CD. The theme SHOULD have been written by maybe Black Label Society or perhaps even Dokken.

I scored this disk a 4 out of 5 for allowing Everclear anywhere NEAR this project.
