Beginning his career by entering amateur contests and sneaking into clubs, Paul Anka has gone on to become one of the most prolific, successful songwriters in history. This year marks his 47th Anniversary in show business, which he celebrates with the June 7th Global release of his latest album, "Rock Swings." It is a concept that takes rock hits from the 80's and adds a swing arrangement to give them a completely different, and fresh new sound. Songs like "Jump" by Van Halen, "Smells like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, "Wonderwall" by Oasis.

generation slice,

This review is from: Rock Swings (Audio CD)
What's cool about this CD is that it is the music of my generation--the lyrics, that is--with the crooner of my parents' generation, and big band sound of their parents. It's a way to speak to them without them realizing it, a way to make them hear. When my generation's music is covered by Paul Anka, I know that it's a respectful and dedicated commitment between artists, but there is also something so very plural about hearing one's music with such a different background--it's like watching a geisha slowly make her precarious and silent way through the streets of Tokyo: it sends your mind places.

I ordered this CD not really knowing what to expect since I had only heard one cut (Jump) on the radio. In fact, when I first heard the song I started to chuckle, then I said "wait a minute, this thing is for real!" The concept of recording rock and pop hits in a "swing" format with arrangements for a full orchestra sounded ambitious to say the least. What a pleasant surprise this recording has turned out to be. For starters, the "re-tooled" arrangements of these songs are well thought out and the musicianship of the players is about as good as it gets. If you are a fan of the sound of a full tilt swing orchestra you'll love this CD for the sound of the band alone.... these guys are smokin'! Paul Ankas' voice has never been better and you can tell from his delivery on most of the songs that he was really "into" these sessions. The entire CD is not terrific because there are a couple of weak efforts (most notably "Blackhole Sun") but overall this is a winning effort by Mr. Anka and company! Congratulations Paul.
