5.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Supplement to play and GM Aug 25 2011
I've played through this supplement first as a player, then read the book as a GM later, for a new group. As a player, we started this module right out of the gate with fresh PCs, and had a total blast playing it. The way our GM ran it, there was lots of challenge, we went through phases of "omigod we're all gonna die" and somehow managed to come up with brilliant solutions to our challenges. I really felt that this evoked the crazy over top feel of Rogue Trader and the WH40k universe.

Suffice to say, the GM I had before changed things around in creative ways. I think this book gives GMs a good overall layout of the plotline, and leaves lots of room for and gives new ideas and side plots. I feel even though I haven't run it, that I have room to do a very different flavoured adventure than what I first experienced. Highly recommend to any new GM not sure how to run a good Rogue Trader campaign.

In conclusion: There are 3 overall arcs that seem to need to be done in order. However, the side plot potential is huge, and one can easily come back to these sideplots at a later point after the end of the main plot. 5/5 for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars The writing and artwork really evoke the right 40k mood May 20 2010

Lure of the Expanse is an important product for the Rogue Trader line because it serves to set the stage for GMs who read the core rulebook and then wonder how to write adventures for their players in this setting. Rogue Trader isn't quite the same as other RPGs, the power level of characters is higher and the stakes required in adventures must scale accordingly. This is quite different from the "player characters as lackeys" that is pretty common in other RPGs where it is fairly easy to start small and grow the conflicts as the player characters gain wealth and power. In Rogue Trader they already have more wealth and power than 99% of humanity so the trick is finding out how to make sessions fun and challenging and that is where this book serves as both a guide and set of examples.

The three adventures contained inside highlight most of the various rules outlined in the core book so you can expect ship-to-ship space combat, exploration and political maneuvering galore. There is plenty of conflict and the normal gritty 40k vibe comes through loudly both in how the stories are presented and the tasks they set forth for the players. The missions are not black and white, good versus bad, so there is ample opportunity for players to delve into moral equivalence and personal corruption as they solve the problems they are presented with in true 40k fashion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad supplement - April 4 2011

I enjoy all the 40K RPG games and supplements. This particular piece was nicely crafted - aside from the occasional type-o. I enjoyed the art and found the whole book to be entertaining enough. I felt however, an imaginative GM could easily come up with most of this source material. Considering the cost of Fantasy Flight books, I'm beginning to expect more innovative supplements.
