Bouricius (a children's librarian and romance writer herself under the pseudonym Annie Kimberlin)opens her delightful book with her own tale of conversion to the romance genre and then provides an insightful tour of the genre itself. Bouricius enlightens librarians as to the appeal of the romance genre to its readers, offers details on the different subgenres of romance, and some entertaining snippets of information on romance authors. Librarians will especially appreciate the practical information Bouricius provides for collection development and collection maintenance as well as her hints on how to handle the ticklish readers' advisory question of how much sensuality a particular reader may enjoy in their romance books. A plethora of appendices is included covering everything from the RITA awards and suggested booklists to publisher websites and words and phrases specific to the romance genre.
The Librarian's Guide to Love in the Stacks is highly recommended for all public library reference collections. It will revitalize and inspire those librarians who already read and promote romance novels. More importantly it will help educate those library staff who undervalue this genre.
